Very good discussion, plenty of interesting viewpoints.
I have had different experiences with different airlines. There is also a little bit of personal side to this argument as well. I have found that all it takes is a little persuasion to convince the person to let you use the phone.

i have used it alot , in travels i found that MOST airlines tell you dont use electonic devices at take off and landings other than thoes time you are free to use your phone is alowed except when ur setting next to an exit "they" say its dangerous.

BA have now printed a guide in the Highlife magazine (back of your seat pocket!) that says you can use mobile phones in flight mode. So next time you are asked to turn it off on a BA flight, you can show them that. It is in the travel information towards the back - I'll get a copy next time I am flying and post a scan!

Had no problems watching a film in flight mode on a flight to Latvia last week (that was Ryanair).
Great to see the interested/jealous faces of other passengers, bored with the lack of entertainment/food on these low-cost flights!

Was on a Ryan Air flight to Dublin last week, loads of bored people on that one, had to flight mode it up with a couple of music videos, got jealous looks too.

I flew to France today with BA and they encouraged flight mode. They announced over the tannoy at the beginning of the flight that all mobiles need to be switched off or placed into flight mode if available.

How can we be sure that when passengers pull out their laptops there is not a problem ?
On ther other hand why are phones now being allowed on some flight carriers ?

The problem with phones in aircrafts is the signal. When GSM can't find a signal, it stays in it's strongest mode, continuously searching for a signal. The GSM signals from the ground don't reach as high as 10 000 meters (30 000 ft), and the result is that an 'airborne phone' is emitting a quite high signal, which have a good chance to interfere with the navigational instruments (a normal GSM phone, even in idle mode, affects an old school compass (I've seen it in action), at close range, with good signal). When an airline carrier allows phones in the air, they probably have an antenna inside the aircraft, which makes the phones' signal a lot more harmless.

Not changing the subject or anything but you CAN be done for drink drving in the UK if your sitting or even sleeping in your car and you have the car keys

i can unfortunately confirm this. but you have to be in your CAR with the KEYS on you. drunk whilst in charge of a vehicle.
Glad to hear that the flight mode thing has been cleared up on BA - must have missed the end of this thread the first time round...
