Quite an interesting thread this; some very interesting points indeed. I must say that I am quite pleased that the EU is expanding, it will be a great day when all of the nations of Europe are part of the EU and we can have a free trade area across the entire continent, plus freedom of travel too. However, I believe that we should keep the EU as an organisation consisting of nation states and not allow it to become a 'United States of Europe' or some such thing.
People have been looking at various historical examples in this thread and I would like to share one of my own with you. Europe hasn't been successfully united in peace since the Roman Empire, ever since then wars and disputes have dogged European integration. One has to realise that Europe is not the U.S.A. or India, the nations of Europe are very different from one another and integrating them into one 'super state' isn't very practical, certainly not in the near future anyway.
Europe is only now finding its feet again after WWII, up until then it was European nations that dominated the world, and had done so for centuries. Now we have a chance to make Europe strong again, but that doesn't mean we should rob nations of their independence. We are much better off as individuals, but individuals that work together and cooperate with one another.
I don't see it being a bad thing to have a European Army that would allow us to be independent of the U.S.A. in terms of military affairs. One only has to look at the Yugoslavian civil war to see how impotent Europeans were without U.S. military intervention.
We cannot present a credible alternative to U.S. global power until each of the member states of the Union acts in the best interests of the Union, as has been stated previously; this doesn't happen at the moment. France is probably the worst offender at this; it consistently looks out for itself and flouts EU laws when they don't suit, although the UK, Germany and various other nations also look out for themselves above the EU common good as well.

It will be a long and hard way for all of us to create a successful and powerfull eu, but we ll do it! The european countries are able to learn from the mistakes done in the past and share experiences between each other. I see eu as a small tree, the next generations will enjoy the fruit of it. But its a great feeling to take apart at a birth of a new era of history.
