Very valid point, but I suppose one could argue that it isn't necessarily that important to be first with technological advances, rather it it is more important how one implements them in the long term.

there is the root of all evil ehm nokia
1610 was one of the first GSM phones with 4 lines display, sms support. 6110 is a legend with great display, superb functionality, nokia begun with x-press covers on their 5110.. 7110 with big display, wap and big addressbook (1000 entries, something SE cannot do by now), hscsd were here before gprs was ..
but credits for bluetooth & colour display go to SE. melody composer was already on 5110 and 6110, as well as smart messaging ..

I have to admit that I have never been all that excited about changeable covers for mobile phones and I have certainly never understood why some people seem to rank them as being a prequisite for buying a mobile.

agree with there. that's why women buy more samsung.
in this aspect nokia and se are similar. nokia with its weird looking design and se with its techie and cold design.

i think samsung realised that long time ago.
so many of their phones are oval-shaped appealing to women.
incidently, the nokia 7200 is also doing quite well even though it got small screen and quite thick and heavy. most probably the attraction is the fabric cover. never seen a guy holding this phone.

Ok, Joe's intention was not to talk about market shares or any numbers but I have to comment aguilas2's comment.
Nokia sold more mobile phones last quarter compared to the quarter before and managed to stabilize but other companies managed to do better than Nokia.
Last year Nokia sold 50% of all mobile phones in Western Europe but this year, they are not near 50%. They lost a little bit more than 10% and globally about 5% which I think is a lot in just one year. So if Nokia is that good, how come they lost so much in just one year? Nokia's handsets are not that attractive anymore and they only managed to stabilize thanks to their aggressive pricing but to a cost of less profit. Nokia used to be overpriced but I don't think they are that overpriced anymore, just take a look at the 6230 which I think is a very attractive mobile. With old Nokia policy, this one would cost as much as the 7610 does and the 7610 would cost more like the Sony Ericsson P900. Nokia had an edge in terms of technology but they realized that isn't the case anymore. That is also why we see some really odd looking handsets from them, hey simply can't vindicate itself technologically anymore.
Nokia 6230 is aimed for business users while the K700i is aimed for youth but they both can do almost the same thing. 6230 wins in memory part hands down but lost in everything else. It is not a surprise that most mobile reviewers prefer the K700i above the 6230.
This is why Nokia will have problem with 3G technologically. They don't have any experience from South Korea or Japan to adopt into 3G market while companies like Samsung, Sharp, LG, Nec, Sony Ericsson and some other companies have a technologically edge here.
