Hi Cyco,

I was wondering if you know anything about external hardware i.e. my speakers. Please don't take this as any offence to your knowledge.

They were working fine earlier on while I was listening to music and suddenly it turned off and wouldn't work. I'm not sure where to start looking. Any help on this one?

Depends exactly what you mean by turned off? Do they have a 'power on' indicator? If so, and if it isn't lit, I'd start by checking the fuse in the wall plug (sorry if that sounds too obvious!)

Easiest way to tell whether your speakers are at fault or if it's your computer's sound card is to plug a pair of ordinary headphones with a 3.5mm jack plug connector into the socket(s) that your speakers normally plug into. If you hear sound through the headphones, then it's your speakers that are at fault.

If it turns out to be the computer and it has on-board sound (built into the motherboard, no separate sound card) then often the cheapest and quickest solution is to buy and install a PCI sound card. You can get reasonable quality 5.1 sound cards for around £20 these days and they're not difficult to install

Doesn't sound stupid at all to look at the fuse, but it's an adaptor I can't open. The computers sound card is fine as I'm using the rubbish speakers built into the monitor temporarily.

There is nothing wrong with the speakers as I've opened them up and put a direct connection onto them bypassing the amplifier. My guess is that the amplifier is at fault but it could be something else...

Yeah, it certainly sounds that way

I can't really suggest anything because to do a component level repair on an amplifier, I'd need to have it in the workshop with all of my test equipment

Sorry about that

@Danny

Things aren't looking good for you either mate From what I've read on the net so far, that TV card is meant to be used only with Sony Vaio computers with Windows Media Centre and as such, the drivers and software are located on the Vaio restore disk that you get with the computer.

It's a long shot, but I did find this driver that supposedly works:

Hi cyco. Searched long and hard last night, tried a variety of Win-TV PVR Drivers. None came to any success tho

Searching for Philips FQ1216ME Came up with alot of links, as did entering the Conexant information.
