It's not up to me to judge it
But I have to admit, that whatever they've done with steadyshot for videos on Z1 is more than enough for camera phone

I am most probably buying the Z1 (since my x10 has lasted almost 3 years, still going strong though ) around December once the price drops and unlocked C6906 is more readily available.

It is the best phone of 2013 and probably going to be the the best until Z2. Almost no other competitor is close to the Z1, and its the whole package for me. I think G2, S4, HTC1, Z, MotoX, and even 5S have good specs and features, but either they have some glaring missing features or the Z1 is just overall much better.

Even though it is arguably the best phone of 2013 and will remain for a while, there are some areas I think it can improve (probably with Z2? ):

1) Optimize software to get higher video playback time. As DACHA mentioned, Sony's video playback time is not even close to others.

2) Expand the small apps software. S4, G2, One skins offer a lot of, while not regularly used, additional features built in. Some of which are useless, while others will be missed when moving on to another OS/skin. However, most can be mimicked through apps on Google Play or importing the apps through custom ROMs, so its no big deal. But its nice to have more usability built in.

3) 32GB minimum storage and options of 64GB and 128GB. I would happily pay $50 more for a 32GB minimum and $50/100 for other options.

4) S-master Audio chip from Walkman. Just so Z1 is all we need (camera, music, videos, and of course calling) Plus its a good bragging right

5) Better and cooler notification led from Xperia SP/P/S/U

6) The carbon/metal combination sounds amazing. Glass back, while it looks amazing, gets lots of fingerprints or would need oleophobic protector, and it just not as durable as metal/carbon fibre.

Highly probably features that I hope will be added shortly through software update:

1080p @ 60fps
720p @ 120fps
4K video

Lastly, just a personal preference:
Increase thickness by 1.1 mm to decrease the top and bottom bezels by 9 mm and sides by 4mm total. This will be awesome as this will still be thinner than the ZL and my x10 and many other phones out there, but this results in ridiculous size saving and gives it a much more compact design.

Other than all of this above, it really is THE BEST PHONE overall

Apple said 15% larger sensor area! The new module includes a five-element, Apple-designed lens with f/2.2 aperture and -- this is important -- a 15 percent larger active sensor area to help cut down on noise.
The iPhone 5 had 1/3.2".
The 1/2.3" sensor would not fit in the iPhone body.

From appleinsider - 15-percent larger active sensor area, not sure if this actually means a larger sensor or apple is just using the sensor better, regardless, at 15.5mm^2 on the current iphone, 15% more would be 17.825 or roughly 1/3" for sensor size but again no idea if this is what apple used, perhaps apple is again using the words wisely and the sensor is the same one.

Guys, stop this discussion about steadyshot.

The truth is that sony uses digital version of steadyshot in their video cameras and even in their flagship DSLT's (A77 and A99) all due to the fact that using sensor shift for tilting fullframe sensor would be too power consuming and would produce too much heat. Probably the same type of steady shot is used for video stabilisation on Z1 and that is why it's not available in still camera. Sensor shift stabilisation will probably come with next year flagship device at the earliest, maybe sony will even manage to shrink 5-axis IS developed by Olympus to fit it in smartphones.

One thing to remember, their implementation of digital image stabilisation for video gives results so close to optical/sensor stabilisation that most users don't even know that this is the case

Can you please link me where you found that? It would be weird for sony to use just digital in their flagships (such as the A99 you mentioned).

I found this review site mentioning a "the A99 features built-in sensor shift image stabilization" I am confused whether they got it wrong or not. (http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/sony_a99_review/)

Screen variations from phone to phone

According to the tester all phones were set to the same brightness.

Whaaaaat, why is Sony doing that? -_-

Now it's clear why some say the screen is average/bad and some say it's the best out there...

that "test" looks weird to me.

for example,

in the first photo of all 8 screens, the middle two in the top and bottom rows are the brightest to me.

second photo, the middle two in the top row and the 2nd from the left on the bottom row seem to have the best brightness/color at that angle (can't really tell color shift due to the dialer being used)..

third photo, the 1st one on the left of the bottom row seems the best of all the screens.

Finally, 4th photo.. the most right on the bottom row seems like the best.

I think this is a visual trick based on the angle of the camera being used to take pictures of the screens. That's not to say there isn't some differences between the screens (there is always some % of difference from one batch to another i'm sure), but the difference, i don't think, is as drastic as these pictures seem to make them appear.

I don't understand when people take pictures to show off viewing angles of screens, why they always put phones side by side when the angle of the camera to take the photo is DIFFERENT depending on which side is closer to the camera. a more accurate method of testing the viewing angle would be to place each phone individually in the same spot. Move the camera to exact points and angles using some kind of mechanism to recreate each shot perfectly. THEN, take each series of photos and place them side by side. This is the only accurate way to show difference in screen quality, color, and viewing angles.

anyway, i'm not gonna let it bother me. still ordered. still quite happy

I thought the screen looked fine to me in store and that was under bright lights. Colours looked good and natural. They didn't quite pop as much as Samsung's but they are over saturated anyway
