For those of you looking at Xperia, please remember the fiasco that Sony Ericsson's high-end phones have become since p910i. P990 and P1i both turned out to be unmitigated disasters. I owned a p990 and I have since decided to avoid SE like a plague. One can not be sure that the X1 will not end up the same way.

And as per Touch Pro and co, I think 80-150,000 are too much for a phone. It can drop in water, you can be mugged, it can drop on a concrete floor and scatter, it can simply die.

I paid 140k for e90 and one day, it died suddenly. iCell could not ressurect it. It is still lying somewhere in my office hoping that someday, someone might need some parts. Since then I have vowed not to buy any phone that costs more than 50k and a Mogul and i780 later, I'm still keeping to my vow!

I have come up with a rather popular formula to deal with that...wait for geeks to use and review before commiting. It helped in my P1 purchase decision process. The good thing about waiting is that the price drops while you are at it.
And this brings up another issue...the price of Windows Mobile devices: Except for Samsung i780, Windows Mobile devices are very expensive and their prices rarely drop. I am praying that the Xperia follows the trend of the i780. Amen somebody!!! .

Amen o! I run the same policy as you. I'm already put off from the Touch Pro: some specific niggles touch key areas of usage for me. I'll pass.

Choosing a new phone can be tough for we geeks. I'm bored of the i780 already and dying of technolust. But there's nothing to upgrade to yet.

Any E71 users here? There's a memory card bug. Files saved on the card disappear at will once the card is removed for any reason. For such a good device... haba!

I disagree. In my opinion, its a question of whether you see it as just a phone or a connected worktool cum mobile office.

My smartphones are laptop replacements, and help me keep on top of my official duties when out and about or even at home.

For that reason, I do not feel uncomfortable spending that range on these sort of devices.

A car too can crash, and can simply die too. So can a PC, TV, DVD player, and even a laptop. Yet, we spend on those.

At the end of the day, the question is, "What utility purpose do these devices serve?"

Cheers!

@oluyom

I think you properly referred to this thing earlier; technolust. That is what it is? The only verifiable utility of these phones (connected devices) is as adult toys, nothing more.

These phones are useful as organizers, alarm, contact database, casual music players, casual cameras etc and without exception all these functions can be performed by a quality nokia phone costing less than 20k. E-mail, web are available on such phones too.

The best pda can only be used for things on small scales, short e-mails, a few lines of notes, posting on forums like this, few minutes of restricted browsing. If you are a truly mobile professional who need to be productive on the go, what you need is a sub notebook with embedded 3g.

A little poll is appropriate here. Who among us here has typed 3 full A4 pages of text on our pda/phone, feels that his phone is as good as any laptop in web browsing, who sends "full" multi-page e-mail with attachments on his phone etc.

An this is coming from a certified technolover here. I have had the best phones and connected devices there are out there. As I'm typing this my home entertainment center is staring at me, an home theater with 7.1 surround speakers, 2 250G pvr satellite decoders, An HD 8 to 1 av selector, a DVD HDD recorder, another 2 Strong satellite receivers, an xbox 360 and Wii, A DVB-T 160G pvr decoder for CTL and waiting for signal digitalization, a multi-purpose DVD player with card reader and USB host, a mediagate MG35 HDD multimedia player with a D-link DI-624 wireless router connecting all connectables with internet access and a 750G Windows Home Server and a 32" LCD TV.

I will list all my past and present phones if I vex!

Alright, I felt like boasting. But I'm trying to say that when it comes to technology, I know what I'm talking about.

Broz. You buy them all for Naija? I only see such gizmos in mags o.

I also see your interest seems to be in Gaming, TV and multi-media. With such heavy players in the sitting room, no wonder you don't regard smart-phones.

@all I went to Zoom last week. The "free" air-card comes with the condition that you pay for one month data subscription. Guess the lowest plan: 5k.
I see it as a crafty marketing strategy. Meanwhile, Zoom is choking my inbox with txt messages... maybe up to 5 txt per day.
