ok, perhaps I didn't give it enough of a go last night as I couldn't really see the point of it, so I installed it again this morning to try on the way to work.
while it worked perfectly on wifi at home last night, it wouldn't load pages on tmobile 3g. I googled this and it seems many are having the same problem and the suggestion is to change the advanced protocol setting from Socket to HTTP, then it seems to work again.
for me it loads noticeably slower than safari, especially on 3g
other than that it is fairly comparable in that you can have full screen viewing, multiple pages open at the same time, history etc.
cut, copy and paste functionality does not work in opera mini, except for the url.
its representation of many pages seems awful. compare safari's view of esato's latestposts page with that of Opera mini, and on opera mini I can pinch to make the display any smaller, or in fact bigger
Also, I loaded BBC main page (same URL) on both and I couldn't get the same page displayed despite doing it multiple times. Safari's page showed the same as IE on my PC so perhaps the Opera mini page is somehow delayed due to their "optimisation"?
so in general I'm not impressed and will stick with Safari

Same here. Seems to be produced very lazily, zooming is disgraceful, some websites, like my own, dont work at all, there seems to be big problems with css.
Not surprised it was approved, just shows how good the mobile version of Safari is in my opinion.

One million downloads
Apple said “Yes”, and iPhone users around the world said, “Yes, please”. Opera Mini was downloaded more than one million times in its first day of availability in each market. Opera Mini is currently the number one iPhone app in the 22 featured Apple App Stores on their site, as of 8 a.m. CET today.

Oh well, maybe a new build of this version will be released soon. You don't seem to be pleased with it.

..and here is that new build. I'll try it out this morning but the change list doesn't sound like it addresses the concerns we've had here...

Have to say I have zero interest in Opera on the iPhone, it just seems completely irrelevant - like fitting an outboard motor on the Queen Mary. I imagine Opera will be quite pleased with all the fuss and free publicity they've gained through this release, and it doesn't surprise me that lots of people have tried it - why not, it's free - but quite why anyone would use this over Safari as their main browser is beyond me.
To be fair, I've always hated the idea of Opera mini - everything you do or see getting mangled through someone else's server - but on the iPhone it's even more of an answer to a question that nobody asked.
