Dining left because of all the changes that were about to happen at Nokia, just like most of the Nokia engineers that are now at Jolla. It happens.. things change, people move along.
I don't think that the 1020 can be considered a "post Dining" project.. at least not completely. The technology they are using on the 1020 was mostly developed for the 808.
The optics design, the oversampling, the zooming, rich recording, etc. All of those things we in development under DD's supervision, and they still deliver.
The 1520/Icon camera module might be considered a post DD project, but we really can't be sure. From the looks of it they've done a fairly good job.
I hope that most of the imaging team can remain intact after the Microsoft acquisition.. I am sure that they will loose some people, but hopefully the main guys stick around.
Microsoft has no imaging expertise whatsoever, so.. its in their best interest to retain talent.

Samsung's GS5 photos are worse than GS4. They are terrible. The phone is crap too hardly an upgrade. When i been using the 1520 it has been a fantastic camera and there is none of that slowness of the 1020. Takes wonderful photos

That's very subjective - they definitely not look worst to me (compared to s4) and definitely not terrible (no review has found them terrible so far). Also the phone being crap that's a big overstatement . But either way why post all this in the lumia 1020 thread?

Just wanted to say that I agree 100% with what you said. I also hope that Microsoft will not let all the work Nokia did on imaging go to waste it would be such a shame

I don't think it matters in the grand scheme of things... even if nokia never made another flagship camera phone again their work has already raised the flag. Other companies like samsung and sony are still to this day chasing down the 808 so its only a matter of time till we get another company to leap forward. Also, Sony has really taken a slap to the face from nokia ever since the N95 and are making leaps and bounds in re-establishing their name as a premier mobile imaging products. I for one am very excited to see what's on the horizon because IMO we're at a WIN/WIN crossroads here.... Either Nokia amazes us again via the Microsoft camp or Sony truly drops a bomb to wow us - either way, its coming and with symbian now dead, I really don't care from where as I only care about IQ when buying a phone.

After the symbian demise and the trojan horse story (y'all know how that ended), I stopped being a fanboy of any brand. So sorry for touching somebody's nerve when I talk bad about the 1020, I talk based on my experience and using one for almost 3 months.

If you were referring to me you didn't touch my nerve. But seeing that this is an open/public forum I questioned your statements as from all the reviews/photos posted online I honestly can't see what you are talking about

Agreed still with Nokia pushing the photo taking capabilities I would love it if they wouldn't stop here-they seemed the only ones genuinely interested in improving the image quality/maybe Apple too to some extent. I especially like what they did with photos taken in low light-they are still above competition here IMO. But yes as you said it doesn't matter who will produce and excellent camera phone next -as long as it will come out
