Telephoto and the new setup is better than that gimmick.

Not Background Defocus app for front cam.
BD cab do nice when it work. But sometimes it does not blur background.
Also 8MP is too low.

Lg v30 has got 3300 mah battery and also its ip68 still its under 8mm and weighs only 155g

. This is a midrange phone, manufacturers have to balance price with specs and this is why I am impressed with the XA2. Its a well rounded device. The pros and cons are well thought of.
I believe Sony could have made the top and bottom bezel thinner but they want to differentiate themselves by having that huge front camera from the rest.

V30 has p-oled, thinner than LCD.
Remember the 2014 Motorola flagship?
Here it was called Moto Maxx.
I guess it had another name in USA.
About 1 cm thick to pack its 3900mAh.

Xa phones have plastic build even then they are thick and heavy and its going to be a major factor which may reduce sales
Another one is redmi note 4
Again metal build 8.5mm 165g and 4100 mah
Where is the justification?

From Z5 onwards I observed Sony's phone had similar thickness but batteries started getting smaller and smaller in capacity. Example, C5 ultra was 8.2mm thick with 2930 mAh but XA ultra was 8.4 mm thick but still 2700 mAh.
I can think of 2 reasons why, I may not be right, but I think either the battery technology sony uses changed and for same size battery the capacity got reduced. Or I think it may be the design, extra components sony may be using to keep the display safe from the battery heat or the battery itself and also adding cooling pipes etc to keep the back temp in control.
Now whatever maybe the reason Sony's batteries got reduced in capacity even when their phones got thicker last yr. So sony did great optimizations and managed to get equal or better battery life than earlier. BUT... No matter what, smaller batteries was one of the biggest drawback in Sony's phones last yr... I am glad they are putting much bigger batteries now and think this is great treadoff most of would preffer of having a larger battery with added thickness than a slimmer phone with less capacity...
I know other brands have bigger batteries and still thinner but so did sony, Z2 was 8.2 mm thick and still had 3200 mAh battery... For some reason that doesn't seem possible currently at sony. We all know what happened in 2016 with the Note 7 in order to pack larger battery in smaller dimension. I would prefer a safer phone which has bigger battery and is a bit thicker.
Another simple reason can also be that as the phones front and back are curved, the thickness automatically is a mm or two more than if the front and backs were flat... Thinking positively, as per many sites who got to check the new series say that these are the most comfortable xperia's till date and don't feel as much thick as the specs says because of so much rounded overall design... Which I am loving by the way...

9.4mm is the center, XA2 and L2 are curved like LG G3, Moto G3..
It also depends on the components inside and type of outside.
XZ Premium is 190g , not sure.
Same GG5 as S8+ , U11 and V30, but way heavier.
My dad has a Samsung J1 2015. My brother a Lenovo K5+.
The K5+ feels lighter than j1.
I have never thought a phone could be that light.
Bigger phones have more pieces inside.
XA Ultra = 202g ( 16,4 x 7,9 x 8,4)
XA1 Ultra = 188g ( 16,5 x 7,9 x 8,1)
XA2 Ultra = 221g ( 16,3 x 8,0 x 9,5)
XA= 137,4g
XA1= 143g
XA2 = 171g
XA2 U is 2mm shorter than 2017, if it had flat back it would probably be less than 9mm.
It earned almost 900mAh.
Many ppl hate flat back, they say curved is easier to hold phone.
@hgautam loop design made phones thicker.
Also newer cpu require less power, probably why many OEMs have decreased battery size.
XZ1 scores same 82h of Z3 in gsmarena battery test.
XZ has same battery and rear cam of Z5. Cpu is smaller.
Only Z3+, Z5 and Z5p have copper pipes for heat. Xz does not.
Lets not forget that Z2 is bulky and Z3 kinda slim.
Only difference was battery, just 100mAh.

Joseph, the XA2 and ultra have additional camera bump in excess to the quoted thickness... Previous models had the same camera, were slim and didn't had the camera bump.
