@brym: the gsm companies are still charging a .megapremium for mediocre service. For less than $30 in the US I was getting a package that gave me 500mins of calls within the US, UNLIMITED data access (not like our unlimited access that is limited to a few gigs), some free international sms, free on-net call, and more. That is abt the same mtn is charging for the late hrs browsing package. Its ridiculous. In uk i left abt 10 days of free browsing on my sim! Thats after loading only £5 on it! Is our NCC still thinking that our gsm is in infancy?

@2tek: my bros, im also behind the times with current affairs. As i got back into the country, i dashed to pick up a newspaper just to be disappointed with the headline reading something like "Yaradua to spend holiday in Nigeria". If that is headline news then nothing is happening here.
With regards to ur map problem, that is the issue im having with all incarnations of google maps. None store buffered maps u've downloaded. They expect u live in aworld where there is cheap, easy and reliable internet acces everywhere! Before i got my phone access, i was just using hotspots to move abt with the googlemaps. It was hard to find a place with absolutely no hot spot. I dont know if google maps or google earth have a downloadable map u could store.

Abu, we will get there someday. While Gsm is not in infancy here, mobile internet is. It is barely a year since we moved from GPRS to 3G in selected cities. And to be honest the networks are offering us cheaper deals/ access than dedicated ISPs. I believe as network infrastructure and capacities increase, data rates will fall further.
Until recently do you know our data plans were quite cheaper than that of Canada?

@dawny try to check if there is no evdo coverage in gwags. I remember thinking that the evdo was restricted to d central districts, but to my surprise evdo is live in maraba which is nasarawa state, though a border town.
@abu i'm even suspectin if that yaradua's hols is not one. It might be a for medical check up, maybe for dialysis or something.
As regards d limited unlimited crap, i was checkin out d data plans of some UK operators. Some of them too have d data cap. I think it was only t-mobile that didn't have limits. But some of them had 6gig limit. But since regular internet is 2nd to air there one wouldn't rely solely on 3g or evdo for connectivity. My folks there pay like 50 quid for a package of cable tv (with more channels than dstv, hitv, fstv and 9ja local channels put together), internet wit download speeds in excess of 8mps and telephone wit all the free minutes in d world. Here we are still battling for electricity to charge our phones.

@ 2tek which network has evdo in maraba?if its starcomms, dey dont even hav service in gwags not 2 talk of evdo.internet is stil over priced in nigeria.can u imagine payin 400 naira 4 an hour in cool cafe,is dat not over priced.its not like d internet is @ d speed of light, its only fair.glo has bin makin noise dat wen their sub marine cable project is completed, internet access wil b cheaper nd d speed faster.i think dats al hype, cos dats normal wit anythin naija.take daarsat for instance,b4 they launched service they talked about revolutionizing pay tv in nigeria nd how they wil give DSTV a run 4 their money.but they launched nd nothin 2 write home about.imagine 40k for decoder,5,500 for subscription.if d channels made sense would hav bin reasonable.more than half of d channels re rubbish.y cant they take a cue from a cable tv operator in d UAE,showtime.they hav lots of channels dat include movie, sports, comedy,nd lots of oda channels.their main catch is dat they re operatin on high definition, who cares?

Hi @all,i was Ait news nd saw d news dat nigeria is ready 2 host west africa police games.is dat not d must stupid 2 host?wit al our problems in dis country,we wil spend billions again 2 host police games wen we re spendin billions 2 host d junior world cup later dis year.i think al dis hostin rights nigeria is winnin every where re avenues 2 steal money.cos wit al d issues d nigerian police have is it hostin police games dat wil improve d average police man who is underpaided, who lacks d basic equipment 2 prevent or fight crime.funny enough mike okiro said he needs 3 trillion naira 2 take d nigeria police force into a standard police force.is dat not madness?

We really have no business hosting any competition given the current economic downturn. We will continue to get it wrong until we have visionary leaders who are committed to uplift this nation.
OBJ blew a God given opportunity and to punish us further he left us with a very sick president to rule a very a sick nation.

@brym: i have to disagree with you with regards to the mobile data infancy. Its in infancy all over the world, not only naija. The difference is while thier own infants are eating ceralac, our own is suffering from kwashoko! The technology is on ground. Its just that they refuse to expand the services to take on plenty subscribers. In the west, their regulating bodies enforce that any service being offered must be made available to a certain minimum number of subscribers at a certain level of proficiency. Hence if u r forced to have the minimum capacity to take on, say, 20m subscribers simultaneously for mobile internet, u wont start by charging a premium when that might attract only a few thousand. That is why its cheaper there. Competition will never bring the price down in naija. See how much we still pay for calls!
