@amby: oh! I forgot im talking to a big man! My phone cycle is closer to 18 months. Sorry for disturbing u, sir! i'm glad to hear the P1 isnt messing up. I think i'll go for it and stay with qwerty. I never really liked HWR. Its to slow. It will take me an hr to write this post with it. I'd forget half of what i want to right b4 i get to writing it. And the fact that its a bit cheaper doesnt hurt either. Now, which way is best to transfer my settings, apps etc?

You've gotta be kidding me! HWR is slow??? maybe on your phone but definitely not on my P1. I like to change phones at least every six months, bcos I get bored with the phone, plus after like six months, the housing usually gets scratched and begins to look old. I no be big boy oh.

@amby: you just sold urself out! Why do the big boys get new phones? Bcos they are getting scratched and they are getting bored with it! Common man like me changes phone when the keypad fails or the charging point is problematic! Pls can i have 3 big boy laffs! HAW! HAW!!! HAW!!!
And regards to HWR, not that im a typist, but u cant scribble on the screen as fast as i can type. Im sure anyone with any usual decent exposure to a qwerty keyboard can dish out 24 words a minute on a qwerty or better. Doubt a HWR can. But if u can, i've got to see u in action. I can do abt 60 words a min when im inspired but do. an average of 40 per min like now. But like i said, if u can do equal or better, pls make an instructional video for me. It'll astound people more than the typing!

@abu: I'm not too sure about the MTN zone thing but I guess that you probably activated "area information" on your phone. Could the percentage display just be signal strength from the nearest base station?
About Glo, I am just content that I got what was due to me. You can imagine how many of their customers they cheat by failing to honour promo promises. Nobody need advise me to take part in any glo promo again

@brym: i suspected the area info thing, but its always been on. It started at they same period that i put my US and UK sims in my phone to test if the wap would work. I also registered my nite bundle at the same time. That all got me to thinking one or the other had a hand it it as the foreign sims have so many built in settings once u put them in. (the t-mobile changed my mtn mms settings!) but as an update, i thru in an unused mtn sim into an old phone and got the same MTNZONE 50%. So it might be the area info agter all. I'll fiddle around and see.
Abt the glo, at the end of the day, u got ur dough, but glo ddnt learn any lesson and 2mrw they will work twice as hard to cheat another! Not u, but surely someone else.

@amby: im torn btwn getting the G900 and the P1. What is gearing u to leave the P1? Im a bit addicted to qwerty keys now, so to go back to a standard numerical will be hard. Pls let me know ur problems with the P1. My P990 is on its last leg now!

I am on my third P1 now:

Sold the the first one to O'Yom day after I bought it: Reason? Cognitive Dissonance...couldn't reconcile expectations to price I paid for it.

Bought the second one a week after, used it for 10 months and sold it to a junior colleague...housing was looking bad besides headphone/charge port
problems.

Bought the third one a couple of months ago...I looked around but did not see a better "affordable" smartphone.

The way I see it, I'll be using the current one till 2010...making me the Platoon Commander of the last bastion of UIQ.

@brym: that really goes to show that the phone has the stuff. I should have bought one while i was away, especially as the naira keeps crashing against the dollar. Any one thinking of going abroad should buy pounds then change to dollars when u get out.

I really don't get it, how can the naira crash against the dollar and remain stable against the pound? I heard it was 179 naira to a dollar.... How outrageous.
P1 sure rocks, but like brym, my phone is getting scratched and need a shiny new phone. I'm attracted to the G900 because of the superior camera quality (BTW P1 camera sucks) plus I want a UIQ3 phone so I can easily transfer all my applications and mods without stress.

@ Abu: I'm gobsmacked nobody knows what mtn time zone is
It actually is a tariff reducing plan on mtn extra cool + some other packages. The more the percentage on ur phone screen, the less the charges. You have to register though. Look it up on there webby ok. I'm down right now so I cant search for the link

@Ify: Checked MTN site could not find any info. I had to google it and got this from www. nigeriabestforum.com

"Hi Friends,

There is something going on now with MTN which I want to bring to you.

Have you noticed that MTN now shows MTN ZONE on your phone recently? If yes, then you are in for cheap calls. They don’t want you to know it. If not, they would have advertised it ever since.

Anyway, here is what you will do to enjoy cheap calls.

Steps to take:

1. When you see the MTN Zone on your phone at about 60, 70, 80, 90%, then dial: *135*1# and Send/Ok

2. After that immediately dial: *135*7# and Send/Ok. Please, if don’t type this second one, you will not be able to receive calls.

3. When you want to make calls, it will show you the percentage discount of the call. Assuming you want to call another MTN line: 0703.2733047. The network will show something like 50% or 90%. What it means is that you will be given a discount of 50% or 90% on the call you want to make. If you like the discount, just place your call. With this measure and feature, you can make 5minutes call with N20 only.

4. If you want to migrate back to the package you were using before, do dial: *135*9# and Send/Ok

So, do enjoy cheap calls these days.

Ken Nwankwo"

Hmmm, interesting. And that makes a lot of sense. All this while I thot it was raw code for area info. But lately, I haven't seen it on my phone

This MTNZONE has raised more questions than it has answered! Im always weary of THE HIDDEN CHARGE!!! The top on my list being
1- how much is charged for migration
2- how much is charged when u are not in the ZONE? (ie no MTN ZONE msg)
3- does the discount fluctuate while u make the call or does the percentage u catch at the onset remain for the whole call?
4- what are the charges for sms? Do i still get my extra cool N5 sms?
5- cost of returning back to old tariff?

Have another sim that i might just experiment with to see. But if anyone has the answers, save me the hassle! Did some one say gobsmacked? Havent heard that in ages! Ifed o!

I wanted to make an comment when brym spoke of the 5mp cam but refrained. But i think i have to stir things up. Pls dont take it personal, cos i've come to respect both of ur observations and views over a wide range of topics. But.... UNA DON CRAZE!
Seriously, i dont see the point of the average joe looking for a camera sporting more than 2mp! Anyone that needs more than that needs a camera with optical zoom. As lond as the 2mp cam has a good lens and its exposure settings etc are good (like the great old k750) u can take fine pixs than would look great on any large screen. Its only if u want to put up picture on ur 60 inch computer monitor (i heard amby has 3 of them!) that u will appreciate the 5mp. For proper photos, i bring out my small sony cam with 7mp and 3x optical zoom. That is enough for me. Even if im producing a billboard!
