@Mizzle
Trust is something that is earned not a given and at this point in time trust in anything SE say is at an all time low, as many of us trusted they would sort out UIQ3 and the P990 problems. Instead of which we all got shafted and had support stopped on devcies that delivered no where near what they promised within in a year so trust and SE don't exactly go well together right now do they.

I admit it will be interesting to see what shape this comes out in, and how close to the expected date it will actually be released.

"Windows Mobile 7 will ship in 2009, according to the document. This makes sense with the Mobile 6.1 point release that is coming around now. Hopefully, Bill Gates will announce Windows Mobile 7 at CES tonight, but if not, you now have advance notice of what is coming next year. Microsoft clearly has a lot planned to make Windows Mobile 7 the revolution it needs to be to compete with Apple, and Mobile 7 is going to bring some cool and excitement to Microsoft’s smart phones."

According to one of the youtube videos, getting the device quickly to the market was one of the reasons they chose to use Wm. That either means that its not far from ready or uiq4 (the other option) is even further off than we think. And its not as if they are rewriting the whole thing from scratch. Oct/nov seems reasonable IMO.

It does sound exciting, but with MS one always waits before getting too excited lest one be disappointed! WinFS in Vista anyone? Or the Aero interface that will only run on a quadcore with 8GB ram and 1GB video ram? (little exaggeration there)
But it does sound good, it's about time WM UI got some invigoration. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of WM, but it lacks some of the gloss and polish of s60 and UIQ and definitely falls way behind the iphone in visual appeal. A nice finger touch interface for WM is due now.

You mean unlike the P990 this time SE is actually testing this device

That is definitely a step in the right direction, though HTC probably did most of the hw testing anyway.
I agree with the view that SE chose WM for speed (and marketing in the US). They should not be venturing into new territory with Symbian 9.5/UIQ4 just yet, another disaster after the P990 would have been very bad for SE.

Which may be also why Sony Ericsson won't release their product in Windows Mobile 7. I would use reliable technology (not that Windows Mobile is THAT stable) and building on top of it rather than being Microsoft's guinea pig for Windows Mobile 7 or UIQ/Symbian perhaps.

WM7 is too far away for X1 (middle next year).
It's a myth imho that WM has to be unstable. Stability comes down to how well the os is integrated with hardware and branding. For instance I've found HP WM mobiles to be much more stable than XDA WM mobiles. HP is a company with a reputation for good quality hardware. So is SE.
Personally I would rate a good example of a WM mobile just as stable as a good example of UIQ or s60.
In cases of UIQ platforms with stability problems this is usually down to SE not giving enough CPU power to the product. The X1 has a 528MHz cpu and 128MB RAM, I expect it will run more than adequately with WM6. The question is, why can't SE give it's UIQ platforms such good processor support
