DoCoMo has changed what they want. Last bold sentence has only a meaning for se.co.jp.

SE will be making high end phones no doubt about it, mid and low brings in cash. High end phones are expensive to produce and will sell less due to their price, SE can't just do these phones or it would go bust. Think of SE as Audi, they sell lots of A3 and A4 cars etc for a good backing so that they can make a few RS and R8 models. Without low and mid end backing, there would be no high end phones for SE.
I have family working at Nokia. These companies are seriously rich, they own loads of other companies, have contracts here and there and will always be rich. Right now at Nokia, they are testing with some really expensive material and doing research that requires huge amounts of money.
A dip for SE is nothing, its not like the Post Office having to cut jobs. Their aim is to have something in every market segment so you will see high end phones and when they are released you will see that a lot of money, time and effort went into the phones.
After the announcement, this thread will go ape like it always does.

It sounds to me like a disproportionately large chunk of the R&D goes on handsets for NTTDocomo. Strange then how it didn't mention AU Win handsets which also can be quite high-end.

Wrong!
Let me quotes again
NTT DoCoMo had demanded handsets with highly advanced technologies, putting a heavy burden on the manufacturer.
"We will stop developing products that are to be released next year" by DoCoMo in Japan, Komiyama said.
It clear that SE have difficutries producing Higer end devices, and will NOT producing JAPANEESE phone again due to unability to follow advancement of Japaneese standart.
Se is a trully KING of MID-LOW END Phones

It's difficult to interpret what this means.
I don't think SE decision about Japan is very important, they probably realized that they were unable to meet some of the requirements within a specific time given their capabilities.
What bothers me is that it is not clear what SE's strategy is where hi-tech smartphones are concerned. If the Xperia line is their answer to creating a brand, than I don't see how they can keep their old customers.
There's obviously a good deal of restructuring and re planning going on at SE, let's see what shows when the dust settles down.
Personally, I only look at SE for high end smartphones, I'm not interested in the low-middle ranges.
