over on the my-sybmian thread for this very same subject someone very close to SE has confirmed there IS a week 48 major update for P990i

only rumour and i'll take it with a pinch of salt but people over on that forum tend to think the guy speaks the truth!

The P990 has the potential to becoming MUCH better. But, UIQ3 inherently has memory leakage problems. All the firmware upgrades and software adjustments (ie, S.man.Pro) will help to make the phone more stable, but I doubt that they'll completely be able to fix the memory leak.

If you don't mind me saying, that's a bit of a silly thing to say - it's as if you're implying that they just used "leaky" memory chips in these phones and nothing will be able to plug the little tiny holes... in reality, the cause of this (and indeed any) memory leak is bugs in the software, meaning patches for the software can and will fix them. There's no "inherent" issue in UIQ3, just a collection of bugs to be swatted - same as in UIQ2 before it.

They should not be releasing a handset that needs this many bugs swatting.... simple as that!

@Guy H - no, they absolutely should not, I agree - all I'm saying is it's not unheard of for this to happen, and it's not insurmountable either. A couple of software updates down the line and we'll wondering what the fuss was all about..

On spot...i donīt think only nokia can improve its previous buggy devices to stable ones via firmware...both n80 and n93 had the same issues than UIQ 3 devices before becoming stable...in fact, this is All About Symbian wrote about n93 some time ago

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
more a Dark Lord of the Sith in the Empire way.
By day you shine, gleaming metallic black,
performing miracles, never looking back.
With VGA vids and TV out, you dazzle all,
that twisting screen and zoom control.
All media submits before your accelerator chip,
while all eyes are on you, there's nary a blip.
Music, movies, photos too,
all in your stride, a Colossus it's true.
But...
By night the gremlins who rule your soul,
come out to play and take control.
A different story then, as orphan processes and rogue memory leaks,
cause frozen screens and reset freaks.
No power by morning is not uncommon,
it seems deep down that things are wrong.
Bring on the updates I hear myself scream,
fine tuning the Force 'til you rule supreme.
Until that day though, your black and fearsome might
remains a powerful but subversively unstable sight.

Orphan processes??? Rogue memory leaks??? Frozen screens??? No power by morning?? Where did i see this before???

IMHO its pure bs considering some devices based on Symbian 9.1 and with roughly the same amount of RAM can be improved by software optimizacion and others donīt

Also, i imagine that if the n93 was from SE, it would have been beaten to death untill the stable firmware came out...well, maybe the n93 was too, but i donīt folow nokia forums
