Hi Cycovision

I seem to have a problem, with my USB network adaptor

Whenever Windows starts up, even though the adaptor connects to my home network, it doesn't tend to work until I right-click on the icon and select 'repair'. I also noticed that until I right-click 'repair' very little packets are recieved (if that makes a difference). This problem seems to go away when I install the Linksys Wireless Monitor but since it occupies a lot of RAM and tends to cause problems, I decided to use Windows own configuration and uninstall the program.

I know that this is a very weird problem and sorry if you can't understand what it is from my description

Thanks in advance

hey cyco.
recently a virus "ravmon" effected my computer. I was able to remove it but it disabled task manager and folder options menu. I was able to enable task manager through administrative tools and messing with the registry(i read it in a mag) and i am sure there is a way to enable folder options through the same method. Do you know how to? I am running win XP on that comp.

@kwiksta

No problem , I get it alright!

If it's anything like the netgear USB adapter stuff, you might need to have the full software suite installed, but disable the networking application from starting up from within the software's own settings.

Reason being that, if you uninstall the whole software bundle, it might also remove vital files that windows needs even if windows is using it's own wireless networking software and even if the driver for the stick is a separate installation.

I had a right headache getting somebody's USB wireless stick working because of exactly that problem although I must admit that it was netgear stuff, your's isn't but the problem sounds distinctly similar!

If there is no setting to not run the software at startup or such like, then you'll just have to put up with the memory usage, I'm afraid

@QVGA

Not altogether sure mate but if it is a registry issue, it's likely listed here:

@Cyco

I am having trouble with my PC and sound. I seem to have problems getting anything out of the PC. I can play songs etc through itunes but say I wanted to watch a video on youtube there would be no sound, unless itunes is playing! In which case you can't hear it anyway!

On a side note about a month ago I lost some features too. I have mute volume play next back track etc buttons on the laptop and when you pressed a volume button it used to bring up it's own volume bar (not the MS one) but then it just stopped one day.

Any ideas on either/both problems?

Cheers

A dodgy itunes update maybe?

First thing I'd do is uninstall itunes and then update the motherboard's sound drivers from the laptop manufacturers website.

If it's all working again, reinstall itunes and hopefully all will be well

Technically, itunes shouldn't have an effect but it's certainly sounding that way from what you've said!

Oh Mr Cyco!!! Got another little problem with the wonderful piece of advanced technology they call a "PC" lol

I have two dvd drives. One is a dvd-rom and the other a dvd rw. The dvd rom has given up on me. For a while it has been reading at a max of 1.9x, but now has just stopped working entirely. If I go to My Computer, its still there and I can eject the tray from there, so I know the connection is ok, but what could it be????

Thanks in advance

Buy a new one. Or get a CD cleaning disk if you're lucky

Seriously, computer optical drives have a finite life and these days, the lifespan typically isn't very long! They're built to be disposable, when the workshop is busy I'm changing an avarage of three optical drives per week

The reason is that, if you take one to bits, you'll find that everything is made out of soft plastic. All of the drive mechanisms that, when you consider the precision that an optical drive needs, should be made out of something that doesn't wear out very quickly are actually made out of something that resembles the material used to make cheap nylon hair combs!

But it's always worth trying a CD cleaning disk first. They're cheap enough and it will benefit you in the future even if it doesn't sort out this problem, since it's always a good idea to keep the optical head clean anyway.

It stops the bloody things from wearing out quicker since the optical head doesn't have to dart about across the disk as much trying to re-read data

This problem is rarely due to a Windows, BIOS, connector or motherboard problem, it's almost certainly either a dirty optical head or simply that the drive has had it
