I tried posting on another thread, but the formatting seems to have been screwed on that one. Anyway.......

Does anyone know if Route 66 on the P910 can search for locations by postcode?

I tried sending this question to Route 66 support and got this response:

=====================
Dear Madame/Sir,

Thank you for contacting ROUTE 66.

Unfortunately, because of the Summer Holidays the ROUTE 66 Helpdesk is currently closed.

We will be available again for all your questions on Monday, August 15.

Thank you for your understanding.

Kind regards,

ROUTE 66 Customer Support

Interesting.

From looking at the reseller sites for the other smartphone versions of Route 66, it suggests that postcodes can be used to find a location. (In the UK anyway....)

I don't think I'd buy it if this wasn't a feature.

not directly no. Once you put in the street name, the postcode is listed, so you can pick the right one from the list.

Not brilliant now you mention it!

I just installed Route66 Mobile Britain and you search by street name.
No direct search by full postcode.
Failing these, you can always zoom into the map manually and select a point to navigate to.

Postcode searches are generally limited to the first few digits anyway, so you may not get the right hits - wayfinder had a very poor selection in its trial version with places not appearing in the postcode search.

Also, how many places do you know the postcode of....people tend to give street names rather than postcodes when you need directions....or if you're navigating generally to a city do you really need the postcode?

The more I think about it, the more I prefer searching by streetname rather than postcode - more like an A-Z.

Just to clear up the confusion on this one, Yes you can do a search by post code. It will not accept the full postcode but when you do a search in the loction section you can type the first section of the postcode and then the first number of the next part, eg SW3 1.
Also, you can type the street name then a commar then the 1st part of the postcode and this will narrow your search down,
eg blahblah Street, SW3.
Hope this helps.

Just tried that...you're right...but if you enter the full postcode it comes up with 'no search results'.
The manual is pretty cr@p too!

This should be good enough then. For a lot of the places we visit with work, we use the post code and then print out the map. If you can search for most of the postcode then it should be OK.

Failing that, what other GPS software would anyone recommend for the P910?

I tried Wayfinder, but dont like the lack of traffic info or that you have to download the maps.
Lack of traffic info also ruled out Navicore for me.

atm there's only Route66 (but no speed cameras), though when TomTom comes out that could be the best - despite them not selling a software only version.
