my pc has been doing this just now. but used to do it ages ago aswell. it will be fine then it will freeze and the screen will go black. then it will either stay black and i have to restart. or it comes back on and gives a error message. i downloaded a new graphics driver (think it was the right one) . just got the same message again but says the new driver i installed has stopped responding. im posting this message with my screen set to 4 bit. i cannot change it. also my pc takes a while to shut down. theres no viruses, etc. pc is clean as far as i know

Could be your video card is dying. I had issues on 2 geforce ti4200's recently. Ram died on one, possibly both actually, and caused all sorts of problems.

i would try reseating (taking it out and putting it back in) your graphics card to see if that sorts the problem.

It's the one with the blue D-Shaped socket on that you plug the monitor into.
If the blue socket connects directly to the main circuit board, rather than a card that plugs into the mainboard then you've got onboard graphics so you can't swap it out!

i found this website about the card and related problems-
http://www.billsworkshop.com/banshee/banshee_drivers.html
also how many sticks of ram do you run if more than 1 take one out see if that settles the problem down. sometimes failing ram can affect other componants
