I think the story dates back to when a war was occuring in India. A sister tied a "Rakri" on her brothers wrist for good luck and spirit during the war. His arm.he was burnt and the only part of his arm that wasnt burnt was the part under the string.
Symbolising that his sister was potecting him in mind body and spirit whilst at war.
And in return a brother will give his sister (who ties the rakrhi ever year) gifts, such as Indian suits and money for their blessing and protection.
