> Nokia 8850 problem

I have recently acquired myself a pretty much brand new 8850, the phone was working fine yesterday morning but all of a sudden the screen just switched off and does not work any more, it receives incoming calls and works fine except the screen does not work. The screen has not packed up because the light still comes on and occasionally the battery meter comes on. Also if you turn it on without a Sim the insert sim card message comes on. Any ideas? Can I take it to a shop to be repaired?

Sounds like a software/firmware problem. Reflashing it might solve the problem.

sorry Dragonfly, but your wrong here. The 8850's had a comman fault which was the screen elastomer coming loose, the same thing that used to happen to the 8210's also.
You need yo replace the screen thats all. Take it to a local phone shop and ask them to replace the screen or buy one from ebay with a T6 screewdriver and do it yourself.

Is it easy to do or would it be better to take it to someone that knows what they are doing? Is there someone on here I can send it to?

It could also be a screen problem. I think the 8850's screen works in a similar way to the 8210, and they were notorious for elastomer problems (a small piece of conductive rubber that went from the screen to the phone's PCB). These problems meant the screen often faded or wouldn't display, even though the phone was still on and working fine. This is why you'd see many an 8210 owner squeezing round their display in an effort to get the screen to work!
If you're unsure about changing LCDs, I'd give it to the local phone shop to fix, save any expensive mistakes

Hmm, not sure. There's a small one man band who operates from above a chip shop in Burton on Trent, there was also a shop in the marketplace there that may do repairs, can't remember what it's called though!
