im looking to build a new PC for second year uni, my old one was 300Mhz P2 lol. so im going for something a bit more modern and up to date.
ive been looking at some websites which sell all the parts, but they have so many, and there all very similar, i wanna use it for web,word, photoshopping and games.
my thoughts.
some motherboard thing
AMD 2600+ processor,
1GIG RAM
256 MB Graphics card
i have a hard drive.
basically, i wanna know which motherboard and processor to buy really, i have a small budget of £350 including monitor, however this excludes VAT. what brands should i go for, i think pentium is too pricey.
please list here, or post advice.

Motherboards to avoid:
PCChips
Asrock
Jetway
MSI
Motherboards to consider:
Gigabyte
Asus
Winfast (Foxconn)
Since you're on a budget, I'd look closely at the Foxconn boards. They get mixed reviews with regards to gaming performance, but they're well built, sturdy and reliable (I've been building PCs with them for over a year and so far no problems).
Processor wise, I think you're absolutely right. Go with the best AMD processor / mobo combo that your budget allows.

i've had a bad experience with gigabyte motherboards. i had 3/4 sent back within a month because the all went wrong. had my Abit nforce2 for about 2 years with no major problems. the only problem i had was for some reason, wrong voltages for the chipset fan, which was fixed by clearing the cmos.

@Ph4z3r
That's not too bad a price for an A64 / mobo combo
I have seen similar spec boards and processors going a bit cheaper in the past so I'd keep looking for a while
@Cornholio
Sorry to hear that

I've found that Gigabyte boards are usually pretty reliable but I suppose every manufacturer gets suppplied a batch of duff components every now and then.

@50 - your motherboard must be able to support your new processor and you must be extremely careful when removing or installing the processor or one of the pins can break, better leave it to somebody more experienced
