This is weird.... I keep getting the "Connect to Internet" dialog popping up every couple of minutes on my P910i -- yet there are no apps running that could be requesting it! (I've inspected the running apps using Sman.)
This all started after I'd performed a restore using PC Suite on the phone. Before the restore, the phone had had a master reset.
I've checked my e-mail settings, and there's no download schedule set there.
Any bright ideas?

Afraid I'm not able to offer any advice, but am having the same problem. I hadn't used my p910 for approximately a month, and now after using it again it has started to display similar behaviour to what you describe. The 'connect' requests are however sporadic i.e. sometimes a couple of times within 5-6 mins, and then nothing for the rest of the day. I have changed nothing on the phone since using it again, so it really is a mystery to me.

I had this a while back. he only solution I found was a master reset. I suspect it was a program I installed, but who knows what!.
I guess though, the problem is, that to backup and restore the phone will bring it back. Have a search on here how to extract and restore the contacts.cdb file (your phone numbers) to get that back, and then you'll have to re-install the programs you had on.
Before you try that however, have you tried the phones without the memory stick? It may be that the "corrupted" file is on there, in which case it's a much more simple fix.

Thanks for the replies so far -- will try the master reset (and selective re-restore), see what happens.
My phone is Orange branded too, but now unlocked (like streetgang's) -- london-uk, pikey, were/are your phones branded to any particular network? If we all have Orange phones, then I have a gut feeling it's something to do with either the Backup program or the original Orange "desktop" (which on my phone is overwritten with SE's Desktop app).
I get the same symptoms whether I use my Orange SIM or my o2 SIM in the phone, incidentally, streetgang.

I'm oange locked. I have read on here that it may have something to do with the orange setup, but I'm not convinced. I had the problem long after i'd had the phone. I thinkmine was related to the Yahtzee i had installed. (purely 'cos when I reset and reloaded, I didn't put yahtzee on, and have never had the problem again!)
Give it a goold old search on here, and you'l find a few threads on this problem, along with a few more suggestions on what to try. As I said though, my personal experience was the reset jobby......

Two workarounds to report, for what they're worth:
1) Attach the phone to the sync cradle for a short time after power up (making sure your PC has an open Internet connection) -- the "Connect to Internet" dialog doesn't show once the phone's been removed from the cradle. [Hmmm ... Not all apps can make use of the PC Internet connection can they? There's a clue. I know Opera does.....]
2) Set GPRP timeout to 'Never', and actually go ahead and allow the GPRS connection. There only appears to be a trickle of traffic [if only we knew where to!!] so even if you're on a PAYG tarriff, it's no big deal. At least it makes the phone useable.

Actually, this has proved to be a permanent fix for me, believe it or not -- ** provided** you're always going to use the same SIM. In other words, having attached the phone briefly to the docking cradle with an active internet connection on the PC, you can then switch the phone off and on ad infinitum without the "Connect to Internet" ever showing up at random again.
However ... if you have an unlocked phone, and are in the habit of switching from SIM to SIM, I've found that the problem resurfaces as soon as you change the SIM. But then all you have to do is put the phone back in the cradle again, and you're okay till the next time you change the card.
Strange, but true.....
What does this tell us about the problem at hand? Maybe having the Internet connection the PC is a red herring? Maybe all the phone wants to do is connect to the PC alone?? And if so, for what purpose?
UPDATE 30 Aug 05 23:40: No, the Internet connection on the PC isn't a red herring -- without it, the problem won't go away, even with connecting the P910i to the sync cradle as described.

I have discovered this evening that the IP address of the connection that's being made (12.129.21.42 in my case) resolves to none other than the Action Engine Corporation -- supplier of the Orange Backup program!! (and the Orange Downloads app) -- and the specific domain of
www.orangews.com, the "Action Engine Server".
So clearly in my case it *is* either the Backup or the Downloads app that's triggering these spurious connections when I change over the SIM.
But what to do??
On another note, as pikey100 suggested, a master reset does fix the problem, but for me this isn't a viable option as I've so much stuff apart from contacts that I don't want to have to recreate.
Deleting Backup or Downloads isn't an option either cos of course they're held in the firmware.
I guess de-branding is another option....

I have a **FIX** to report!
An inspection of the contents of the backup file I'd used from my old phone [see my OP] revealed that there was a fair chunk of Action Engine stuff on the C: drive [ie, additional to the app itself in firmware] copied over to the new phone. I can only assume that this copied data was creating some kind of conflict on the new phone.
Anyway, all I've done is to simply rename the following folders using Sman or whatever [don't want to risk doing a delete just yet!]:
c:action engine
c:systemappsAExxxxx.. [6 folders that begin with AE]
Job done!
[I've since found that this action has simply disabled both Action Engine apps on the phone, Backup and Downloads. Neither appears on the Apps list anymore. So this "fix" has more to do with the fact that the apps are no longer running, rather than having removed any conflict.]
