i'm using an mp3 aswell it's no song and that long but it works just fine

yes it is possible to use an mp3 as a message alert however it will not play the whole song, only something like 10 or 15 seconds worth.

You can use a simple mp3 cutting programme found all over the internet to use the section you want and trim the mp3 down to size.

I think the duration is 9 second long. Why anyone would want a message tone to last longer than 9 seconds is beyond me!
