I've been reading the O2 contract deals thread and it seems to have been a great source of info for those wanting to haggle an excellent deal on a contract renewal.
My Orange contract is up next month, so I was wondering if people would post their experiences and/or tips for dealing with Orange's retentions department.

from my experiance best job is to get a new connection (by the by orange are pretty poor when it comes to good deals anyways) other than that just ask for your PAC code telling them your thinking of porting your number to another network and they produce their best deals! Failing that go and work in a mobile shop and get 40% off and free unlimited GPRS! YEY for workign at Phones 4poo!
Oh and if your on a low tarif dont expect much because they really couldnt care less.

I actually phoned a few days ago and chose the option called "If you are thinking of leaving Orange" .... I told the guy that I wasn't really happy with the deal I got (paying full price - I was on the Anytime 120 for 9 months, then upgraded to the Anytime 200 tarrif.... when I got my contract I didn't know much about cashback deals)
I also mentioned that the upgrade line hadn't really offered me much either (only either a free K750i or W800i..... no reduction in line rental or extra minutes. The only deal was 6 months of double minutes if I agreed to an 18 month extension instead of 12)
He basically said "so do you want me to schedule your cancellation for next month then?" ..... no offers, no questioning why I wanted to leave.
When I said I needed a PAC code to take my number with me.... he then said I could only do that within the last 30 days of my contract, so I would need to phone back and they would then send it to me by text within 48 hours.
I'm not wanting to get my hopes up too much..... but when I phone back next week....what are the chances that the person will actually care??? - my bills aren't *that* low.... 30 quid line rental + 5 for orange care....then I usually spend an additional 5-10 pounds on top of that (three months ago the bill was 65 quid, I was hoping the system would flag that as decent usage)

after two years at £60 a month they still dont give a monkeys. Unless you need orange for any decent reason move to someone else for a better deal (02 250 provides great offers and means you genrally get a better deal (£35 a month)) if your near kendal drop into phones 4u I will sort ya out and pay off your remaining line rental.
edit:the only reason I'm still with orange is because i like there service and have little reson to change until some form of hermione arrives

If they won't offer me a deal then I'll definately be moving, but the main thing is that I want a 200 minute x-net anytime tarrif and don't want to be paying anything even close to 30 quid (a lot of the cashback offers work out at around 15-18 for a suitable tarrif with free K750i or W800i)
I was a little shocked because quite a few Orange customers have told me that they got offered decent renewal deals over the phone when they called for PAC codes. It caught me a little off-guard that the operator wasn't at all interested.
Another obvious benefit to being offered a direct deal from Orange would be that I'd not have to mess about with remembering to collect on cashback offers or porting my number.

I love being a student as I get 1000 texts, 120 minutes and a free phone all for £25 a month and get £100 off the contract, (50 for trade in and 50 for saying you've been referred to orange by a friend, they also get £25 when you connect). Also half price calls to landlines and oppurtunity to take a break in the contract if needed.
When coming to renew my contract i wasn't even offered a free upgrade so i'm just going to take out the same contract again. I don't mind having a new number for £50. One of my mates was spending on average 40 a month on orange and he was offered a fantastic renewal contract like 400 x-net minutes and 1000 texts and some other stuff like free weekend calls. So looks like you have to be a pretty hefty user to get any decent deals.

When I phoned the upgrade line, the guy said that I could probably get the W800i for free, but that I'd have to go through a 3rd party for the upgrade like Carphonewarehouse or something - I thought it was just temporarily because they only launched the W800i on Orange on the 1st of September or something.
Vodafone is the other 'major' network that I would consider, but it seems a lot like marmite..... some people love it.... some hate it. Orange has been good service-wise, but not good enough for me to continue paying full price for the privilege.
What I definately want to avoid is paying Orange an extra 35 quid next month if I'm going to be leaving for another network.....so I'm going to phone next week and if they don't offer me anything I'll get my PAC code, cancel the insurance and move to the very cheapest tarrif while I move to O2 or Voda.

hmm, I've got to say that's not much of a deal really. The 200 x-net anytime tarrif is 30quid usually and the handset would no doubt be free. Students can get 1000 free texts per month, so I don't think it's too much of a stretch to get 500 thrown in for regular customers.
Was it an upgrade/threatening to leave offer you got that on?
