Alienware attacks the Apple iPod

ALIENWARE decided to release a gadget. It's interesting that after cool looking PCs, followed by a nice laptops, USB keys and servers the company went for MP3 players.

I believe that a lot of vendors took a lesson from Apple that you can do a nice design make "fashion ware" and make some bucks selling existing marchitecture, and even make your customers happy. Alienware decided to go for a radically futuristic design, with its world wide recognisable alien head in the middle of the player.

The company will offer two versions one with 512MB of memory and one with 1GB and both will be available in October, just before the holiday shopping season. We still don’t know the prices of those devices but we learned that you will be able to get even more storage for your music with a memory slot card. We don’t know which memory card standard Alienware wants to endorse.

Alienware will ship this device with special noise reduction headphones and will offer you the capability of listening to FM radio. The device itself will have an LCD where you will be able to read the track it's playing and the next one queued.

The company didn’t forget to include Digital Rights Management (DRM) marchitecture to provide an option to download your music from online commercial and legal sites.

Any player has to be better than an Ipod. Over-priced, over-hyped and over here

I'm glad Alienware have gone for a more contemporary design with that player as opposed to some of their shockingly embarassing PC cases!

There's cool, there's geek, there's uber-geek and then there's Alienware

Few updates,

As sales of digital music players are accelerating more and more manufacturers tend to offer something for this market. Alienware, a maker of high-performance personal computers, has been selling players from companies like Archos or Creative Labs for some time now, but for this holiday season the company is going to offer its own MP3 player called CE-IV (Close Encounters-Fourth Kind).

Alienware’s new line of CE-IV digital audio players will initially include 512MB and 1GB versions. Each player will be equipped with radio, memory slot for additional flash, ID3-compatible LCD screen showing artist and track info, multi-preset equalizer that can enhance bass and other necessary capabilities. The main attitude of CE-IV music player is its body designed after aliens and spaceships

Miami, Florida-based maker of computers for gamers and professionals will also offer its clients the so-called HUB docking sound system, which is compatible with the CE-IV player as well as some other audio players, according to the company. The HUB is equipped with two stereo speakers and subwoofer that provide 30W RMS output power in total. The HUB will be equipped with a headphone jack, auxiliary input A/V line output, remote control and will support 3-way power: AC/DC/batteries (AC adapter and desktop cradle included into the package).
“With the introduction of the new CE-IV digital audio players, Alienware continues its well-established tradition of delivering highly innovative, stylish products that rise above what else is out there,” said Frances T. Alvarez, director of licensing for Alienware.

Pricing of Alienware Close Encounters-Fourth Kind was not declared. The cost of the HUB docking station was also not stated publicly. The player is expected to be available in October.
