Anybody have any idea how to get it back to normal, you know with recycle bin in bottom right hand corner, and icons to the left.
I have tried control panel - appearance and themes but nothing happens. It just stays the same

There might be a hidden "desktop.ini" file within your desktop folder. Using File Explorer, go to the following location:
C:\Documents and Settings\\Desktop
(Where is your sign-in name)
... and see if there's a desktop.ini file in there. If not, it might be hidden. select Tools/Folder Options menu item from file explorer and select the View tab. Then change the "Hidden files and folders" option to "Show hidden files and folders" and click OK. If Desktop.ini exists after that, delete it.
