You could try installing
ALON Contact Guide or
VITO QuickContact. Both let you backup & restore your contacts. Trying to do it manually is difficult because the contacts.db file is write-protected while your phone is being used.

You can select the Contact Manager option, select all the contacts and then "send" them as an email.
1st option: send it and you'll received on your PC (?) a message with a "big" .vcf file (Contact.vcf). Just send it back to you phone when you are finished.
2nd option: save the email as a draft. Find the Contact.vcf file on your "c:" drive in your \system\Mail directory. That may be quite difficult to find since there can be many folders (the directory is c:\system\Mail\00001001_S\a\00100baa_F\ in my case). You might be helped with a search utility. Once located, copy it to you MS-DUO with a suitable file manager
To get the contacts back open the file. Your phone should ask you to add (or not

those contacts to your directory.
Hope it helps.

You can back up your contacts, calendar entries etc wirelessly using the free service at
http://www.mobical.net.But before doing a reset, I'd be inclined to check that your prob doesn't lie with the SIM card itself.
