> Sony to cut 10,000 jobs worldwide

Electronics giant Sony has announced plans to cut 10,000 jobs worldwide as part of a restructuring programme.
The job cuts, which represent about 7% of the company's workforce, will be achieved by March 2008, the firm said.
About 4,000 jobs will go in Japan, with the remaining 6,000 cuts overseas. The company will also close or sell 11 of its 65 manufacturing plants.
Sony, which now has its first-ever non-Japanese chairman, has been losing ground to rivals in key sectors.
The company that invented the Walkman has been humbled in the portable music market by Apple's iPod, while it has also been caught out by the shift from traditional cathode-ray tube televisions to flat screens.
Losses forecast
In its announcement, which came after the close of trading on the Tokyo stock market, Sony said it expected a group net loss of 10bn yen ($90 million) in the current fiscal year.
Over the past five years, Sony shares have lost two thirds of their value. In Thursday's trading, its share price fell 2.2%.
Sony is the world's second-largest consumer electronics maker, the biggest being Matsushita.
Its long-awaited restructuring plan follows the appointment in March of UK-born Sir Howard Stringer, the former head of its US operations, as the group's first foreign chief executive in its 59-year history.
Despite its setbacks, Sony has had success in its film division and with the PlayStation Portable games console.

yer sony were fools to not do anything about flatscreen tv's i think that is what got them the most.
No they on for another gamble with the Blu-ray disc......
Ov course PS3 will sell...but for what price at sony's hq's
it will be like 2010 before sony "Breaks-even" on selling the PS3 console, so they have to hope blu-ray disc does "GOOD" not "Well" or "OK"

but seriously losing to ipod -_-
I mean no offense to ipod owners but it's the ugliest piece of hardware I've ever seen, I don't understand people nowadays, why can't anyone make a mp3 player that looks better and performs well it's not that hard, I'd rather use my k750 (1 gb msd) than be caught with an ipod anyday.
I have a cybershot (8mp/ 8x optical zoom - carl zeiss - I love it)
I also recently bought a psp (love it do to homebrew all I play is old nes games on it and I got taiko drums/ puzzle bomber and puyo pop because I'm a junkie
)
I have a ps2 (I gave up on consoles a long time ago I prefer pc games multiplayer fps mainly but I got it for FFX
)
also got a handycam and I have sony memory sticks and accesories, and none of them has ever let me down I love the company products are great design is cool and reliable, the only thing i don't like about sony is Sony ericsson's k750 because it drove me crazy with the crashing/firmware but hey nobody is perfect
, besides sony ericsson has different managment only the name is the same
