I am in the US for my internship and I brought my beloved t68 (upgraded R2E006) with me. It is cool to have a phone working here! I also got a Cingular card for it and now I am just fine.
The problem is that the reception is bad. It changes from 0 to max if you cross the street or turn around a building... I was just wondering if this is due to the reception of the t68 (it might be bad on a 1900Mhz network) or if Cingular has to be blamed. I never had any reception problems back in Europe.

Another frustrating thing is that all the cool features of my phone are absolutely useless here (MMS, E-mail, GPRS)...
I think that is the reason why those advanced phones are not sold much in the US. This is just the market where European producers (Nokia and so on) empty their stocks of old phones.

Europe is much better if you own a phone. I also complained all the time about carriers, but here it is 3rd World! My question now is: is the reception of the t68 worse on 1900Mhz or is it just a network problem?

Of course I am aware that in California most buildings are made of steel and this doesn't help that much mobile phones.
Anyone able to answer or wants to comment?

I have not been to America; but I have heard that GSM over there is still in its infancy and has yet to be in full-swing as Europe and Asia.

Probably a bit of both. I guess there's a reason to Motorola sticking to ext antennas on almost all models.
I live out on the countryside in Stockholm, and my t68 has poorer reception than my old 7110, ext antenna has better reception in poor conditions, would be the conclusion.

Welcome To the US! I am a Citizen of the US, and am sorry to say that cell phone reception is terrible over here, and that crossing the street will give you that terrible reception. Also, you are subscribed to Cingular, which is the worst US cell phone company in the world. Reception is very bad, and people have complained about it, (at least everyone I know) So, the US cellular phone system is horrible, but I have to stand it. I live here!

I bought my T68m here in California from Cingular. I went to Basel, Switzerland and had it upgraded to R2F0004. In California, my reception has been good both before and after the upgrade. When I was in Europe (Germany and Switzerland) my phone was constantly losing signal and I often couldn't use it at all. I couldn't use my advanced features like GPRS over there which works fine for me here in CA. Also, my SMS often didn't work over there across networks. My phone seems to have better reception here with 1900 than there with 1800. I have been on GSM here since late 1997 when I had a Motorola StarTek with PacBell (now Cingular). As for Cingular being the worst cell company, that's BS. In California Cingular is the ONLY GSM network and the others like ATT or VS (T-Mobile) use Cingular's network for their GSM/GPRS offerings. It is still true that the US lags Europe in the newest technology, but this lag has been diminishing fast in the past year or two. One complaint I still have is that no carrier over here supports MMS yet.

It is so cool to get off an international flight and make a call right away on my own phone!!!

Let's have it then, Anyone out there know of the worst cell phone company in the world? Let us Know! Try to beat Cingular, with their bad reception, small coverage area, and Expensive ass phones and plans! Sure they are having the rollover minutes plan now, but you have to have the 39.99 or above plan to qualify for it. So if you are subscribed to a shittier company than that, I would like to know!

Diddly0071, Cingular used to have great rates before, but they have seriously changed it and made it A LOT more expensive and practically ridiculous prices. I wouldn't be surprised if they go bankrupt.

As for reception, I don't know pinolo77. The reception is just wierd here, but they do have GPRS and Email, no MMS though.
