my pc takes ages to load the user login screen and does not switch off properly. will either freeze at the logging off screen or will not do anything or will say "it is now safe to turn off your computer" even though it used to automatically switch off. im running xp home. dont think i have any viruses or spyware.

still has that problem i talked about a while back where it freezes and says it was a graphics but i dont expect you to remember. my pc had crap specs but been on xp for a while and only just got these problems.

how long have you waited when turning it off? mine takes about a minute to go off after pressing the power button on the keyboard, also when i go to shut down. the only thing i can think of which is slowing down the boot up is lots of programs loading before you log on.

First thing is to make sure that you have advanced power management switched on. This could be what's causing the 'it's now safe to turn off your computer' screen. Go to control panel - Power options and check all of the tabs for an 'advanced power management' or similar checkbox. Tick it if it is't already.

As for your other problems, they could easily be hardware related. Go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer and double click on the System icon in the right hand pane. You'll be shown a big list of recent events that XP has logged. If you see any red crosses or yellow exclaimation marks, double click on them and it'll tell you what happend to cause the error or warning. Sometimes it can give you a clue as to what's causing your problems.

Taking ages to shut down can be caused by a number of problems. Basically what happens is that windows firstly shuts down all running apps, then shuts down any services that are running before finally switching the thing off. Some services on slower computers can take ages to sort themselves out and shut down (Norton Internet 2003 is a classic example!).

But it can also be indicative of a corrupted background app or service, or even a hardware problem such as a dodgy hard drive or memory module. See if you can find anything in the event viewer and let us know if you do!

lots of red crosses. ill give you you some examples:

The SSDP Discovery Service service depends on the HTTP service which failed to start because of the following error:
The specified procedure could not be found.

Yup, looks like your services have got mashed up. This could have been caused by previous malware problems, corrupted program installations or uninstallations or, quite unlikely, dodgy hardware.

If you were able to bring it into our shop, I'd run a hardware checker on it first and then back up your stuff and reinstall it if it passed all the tests. Obviously you can't do that, so given the stuff in the event log, You might just want to try the back up and reinstall. It does sound more like a software problem than hardware so there's a good chance you'll see an improvement after a reinstall but of course I can't guarantee it. This isn't the sort of fault I can diagnose without seeing the actual machine

You could try a system restore first as faultymonkey suggested but to be honest sytem restore doesn't usually sort out problems with services and it's never as good as a full reinstall anyway. Of course, if you've already reinstalled it recently then it's most likely to be hardware or a program that you've installed and so you'd need to take it to the nearest computer menders!

How are you refromatting it? Using a restore disk or a normal Windows disk? Thing is, you can't possible have viruses if you've really reformatted (except boot sector viruses maybe but that's unlikely nowdays) because it removes absolutely everything from the hard drive. If you're using a restore disk, make sure you select the 'destructive restore' option. It should warn you that you're going to lose your files and any applications that you personally have installed.
