Listen to me Max, whatever you do, DO NOT download any free programs that claim to speed up your PC and / or internet connection. The reason is very simple, adding programs to your PC automatically slows it down (particularly if they set themselves to start automatically and run in the background) and most (but not all) of these free PC tweaking programs are SPYWARE! Aaaargh! Nasty, horrible, computer killing spyware
So, conversely, the way to speed up your PC is to uninstall any unnecessary programs that start up automatically, clear your temporary internet files regularly, run spyware and virus checks regularly and do not install any crappy free programs!
As for your internet, there are a few tweaks you can make to a broadband connection but frankly they make very little difference. I've got no idea how old your PC is but generally the best way to speed a PC up in all areas is to (in this order):
1. Add more memory
2. Add a better graphics card
3. Add a seperate sound card

also, once in a while I think its worth rebuilding the software side of the pc and thats just what I did yesterday and this morning.
Fortunately, Sony make it dead easy by providing restore discs which put the hard drive back to the state it was when you bought it. After that its just a matter of installing the software you
really use and for me, my Vaio laptop is once again flying tonight giving me a nice smile on my face

lol, good advice from the main man there!
Just make sure you burn all your music, photos, office docs etc. to CD first since the best way is always to do a 'destructive restore' or 'fresh reinstall' which has the unfortunate side effect of wiping all your stuff off of the hard drive

yes Cycovision, good advice. I forgot to mention to be sure you've backed up everything if you are doing what I suggest. I also went through everything installed writing down settings and recording what programs I really do want to reinstall.
btw, I use and thoroughly recommend
Acronis True Image for backing up your stuff. Its got me out of a few tight spots in the past and also very handy to backup the whole PC before initialising it in order to send of for repair. I just save to a big spare hard drive on my wifes desktop across the home network and when the pc is returned its just a matter of restoring from the image backup and you're back where you were.

@Masseur
Yup, Acronis is very good. My personal stratagey (not disimilar to yours by the sounds of it) is to do a fresh install, load all the stuff I want and then use Norton Ghost to produce an image on the slave hard drive. Then, when the PC starts getting a bit crappy again, just Ghost the image back over to the main drive and jobs a good 'un

the only internet optimization software i recommend is Dr. TCP, go to DSLREPORTS.com do a tweak test, speed tests and whatever else.. the tweak test will tell what paramaters you should use Dr.TCP to change, and give you a rough estimate of what to change them to, with explanations.
