Dear Friends, I am using a combo of 6600/Airtel GPRS prepaid@ Rs.5 perday / infrared connectivity which is quite satisfactory, but the speed is 9.6 kbps. Can the speed by augmented using a bluetooth connectivity or subscribing to full internet or any other method to increase data transfer speed. I use both laptop as well as Desktop PC.

Hi!
Welcome to Esato!
I'd say 9.6 kbps is pretty good for a gprs dial up setup.
I get only 3-4 kbps.
And using bt won't really help much because bt only helps transfer of data between the modem (6600 in your case) and the pc and not the network speed.
EDGE it seems is the only way out for faster data speeds.

Thanks Whizkidd, but i would like to point out that the i can see the message "airtel connected at 115000 bps" but when i try to set my IR cable max. connection to to more than 9600 bps the modem is not recognized and the IR icon which is in the task tray disappear, when i reinstate the max conn speed to 9600 bps, it re-appears. So, i think the IR cable is an impeding the speed, hence my query and your reply also says blue tooth helps tol transfer more data between the modem and the PC, in fact i wanted more data to flow between the PC and modem as the ir cable was restricting the flow. Anyway i would be experimenting with BT and keep u informed. Thanks buddy.

@derek> Point 1> a toughie- Talk to Airtel CC, asking them to give 'Practical' answer- whether network in your locality and THE handset cud do it under normal conditions (NOT just their 'ideal' conditions). #Point2> A chain is as strong as the weakest link. At user end, speeds can be good with Data Cable-> BlueTooth-> InfraRed Port. #Point3> Your msgs about 115000 speeds.. do you also believe everything said by Fairness Cream advts. too?Then- just be content.Coz rated max benifits are ALWAYS with IFs & BUTs

If you're certain of the max speed your gprs, then the bottleneck could be occurring between your modem and your pc. In this case, bluetooth would help. Clarify with your service provider first.

9,6 kbps???? that`s damn slow. I get about 50 kbps on Orange GPRS . With Edge i get 150-180 easy.

First of all edge is not implemented in airtel mumbai. It's only for airtel live tv.I am telling from my personal experience ,i connected my 6630(class 10 edge handset)to toshiba laptop by supplied dku-2 usb cable. On connecting,it said connection at 250kbps.Actual speed was not more than 15 kbps in night. At day time,it max out at 10kbps.So i dont see point in getting edge enabled handset only for this purpose of airtel. And now they charge 400 bucks per month for 100mb so i will say using mtnl broadband for 500 rs per month, and 1gb download cap is much better deal.In my ho.

@ Dr.pratikB.
"mtnl broadband for 500 rs per month, and 1gb download cap".....at what connection speed 256 or 512? And actual dload speed? And what after 1GB is over???
I ve been considering getting a bband connection & deciding between sifi, hathway & 7 star.
Rightnow I m using Tata cdma @ 115kbps with dload speed @ max 30 & min 15 but become expensive @ 40 paisa/min.
