Is there a trick to getting Remote control to work? Bluetooth is enabled but I cannot control any of the 3 programs.

Does your Bluetooth hardware support Bluetooth HID profile? If not, you'll need a newer/better bluetooth adapter.

This might prevent your remote controlling.
BTW, devices need to be paired
Just in case.
Works fine with me. I got a Vaio with BT in it and, if Phone monitor is closed, the remote controlling works fine.
