i have amd athlon, win xp (fresh instalation), dvd nec 3540 (master and connected to part of ide ribbon closer to mb), cd asus 52-32-52 (vv). dvd is recently installed and behaves quite ok, but since then i'm experiencing problems with cd. when reading a cd, cpu usage rises dramatically, and pc becomes EXTREMELY slow. burning cd on x32 takes 10mins (!) and burning fails at the very end, because of buffer. HELP! would changing order solve this? This message was posted from a T610

First of all, check that the jumpers are set correctly. One should be on Master and the other on Slave. Don't set them both to Cable Select. You could try swapping the drives around, and I'd also try a new IDE cable as well since they often become faulty for no apparant reason whatsoever!

Also, you need to check that DMA is enabled for both of the drives. There's a 'How-to' here on how to go about this:

http://www.blackmaxpc.com/Guides/Enable_DMA.htm

One more thing: When you plumbed in the DVD drive, did you install any software that runs in the background or prompted you to make changes to your DMA settings or such like?

thx! jumpers are correct, no background sw, i'll try to swap them, btw did you mean to change master/slave selection, or to swap order on ribbon, or both? This message was posted from a T610

Yeah, try swapping both

After that, try each drive on their own, then try a new IDE cable (I reckon it's most likely that)

Failing that, you might have been sold a dodgy DVD drive
