Hi im getting a mac (yey possibly switching from evil windows) its a power book g4, 1ghz with 512 ram, I have never had a mac before so I have absolutly no idea what software I should get. Can anyone help me as I could really uses the advice?
I use my normal pc mainly for editing photos,
word documents (would be usefull to have a program that can open up microsoft word documents)
the ocasional film editing (thoguh I think imovie is supposed to be good for this)
listening/updating my ipod (itunes)
I also want to write cd's on it and watch some dvd's
is there any dvd programs that let you change the reigeon (unless it is already reigion free)

Well, the good thing is, that most of what you want comes with the computer.

iPhoto for organising/editing/printing photos

iMovie HD is a great video editor

iTunes you probably know about

The Mac OS comes with built-in CD/DVD burning software (iTunes, iDVD and the desktop can all do this)

When you get your Mac you'll have to find out what DVD drive is in it then do a search for a region-free firmware or hack. The Mac OS comes with a built-in DVD Player app.

You can get Microsoft Office for Mac, which is obviously the best for editing Word docs, but also Apple Pages can do this.

cheers jools

I have used imovie before doing some basic video editing and it was quite easy to use. And suprisingly I do knwo about itunes lol.

Where would it say about the type of dvd drive in built? Also I have heard that reigion free firmware upates can be risky is it true?

I can't believe that youcan achually buy office for the mac lol I may achually do that. is the other apple one free?

If you find iMovie a bit basic, there's Final Cut Express HD.

The "Apple System Profiler" (part of the OS) will tell you the manufacturer and model number of your DVD drive. Firmware updates are always risky, and could potentially invalidate your warranty. But depending on what drive is in there you may just be able to run a program which resets the number of region changes.

Pages comes as part of Apple iWork '05 and is £49

Office for Mac is actually better than the PC version!

I only do a bit of basic editing and only very ocasionally so it will probally be ok.

I don't think my mac will be under warrenty, I couldnt afford the new ones so Im getting one 2nd hand, If I had to do a firmware upgrade is there much of a chance it would stop the drive from working as thats what id be most worried about lol?

Also do you know any good photo editing programs? I use corel photopaint at the moment, but I would'nt mind changing to something like photshop (I think thats the name of the professional one)

Potentially you could damage your DVD drive by changing the firmware, but I've done it on all my Macs and never had a problem (plus the ones at work) so you should be ok as long as you follow the instructions.

Adobe Photoshop Elements (the slightly cut-down version of Photoshop CS) will probably do more than enough for you.

I just had a look at the previes of photo shop elements 3.0 and it seems ok, but possibly a little basic for myself, (not 100% sure untill I try it) but I do advertisements this means cutting out images and even removing colours, is there a version above it?

Howdy @JoolsG4 still love my Mac Mini! (my screen on it is a bit OTT)

@lukebonathan may be so bold as to suggest Mac the Ripper

Copy your fav DVDs to HDD (may fill it up quickly so get yourself a nice FireWire HDD) write youself a nice 'wee' Applescript to give you a menu of the directory structure to play DVDs and no more need to handle your DVDs!
