Symbian phones cannot do it : using Skype for free at ReadytoSurf Wi-Fi hotspots
Here is an interesting article at msmobiles and yet another reason why I have choosen windows mobile 5 over symbian phones. Both my JasJar and k-jam have wifi and both come preinstalled with skype
Although I have a subscription with BTopenzone they provide roamnig capability to ReadytoSurf who happen to have a hotspot next in Marylebone station which is next to where I work
October 03, 2005 [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)]
USA is a leader in things wireless: many operators offer there mobile Internet for flat fee, Wi-Fi coverage is very good and in several cities Wi-Fi is free or soon to be offered (Google Wi-Fi for example!). The only problem with USA is a weak coverage with UMTS (3G with video telephony, CDMA EVDO doesn't support video telephony). Germany has very good coverage with UMTS and already first operator in Germany is offering mobile Internet for flat fee. While 3G coverage in UK is still weak and there is no flat rate mobile Internet in sight, there is one interesting thing available only in UK: completely free access to Skype through Wi-Fi hotspots of ReadytoSurf - operation owned by Broadreach Networks Ltd.
You can't deny that Symbian phones can't do it: use Skype in mobile devices. Moreover only few models of Symbian support Wi-Fi while all Pocket PC devices support it (either through built-in Wi-Fi or through SDIO slot).

Eh?? I've been using flat rate mobile Internet on Orange UK for the past 12 months.
Presumably you're referring to *unlimited* flat rate access?

Possibly you meant that Symbian phones couldn't do it
yet since developers seem to be adding more and more components and features to phones which are (sometimes) growing progressively smaller. Any possibility/probability that such an addition will be available in Symbian phones in the foreseeable future?

@scormie, thats from their article but yes, I understood it as unlimited.
btw, It is possible to get unlimited fixed rate 3g on vodafone (its about £52/month) but its a data only service which you normally get when you buy their PCMCIA connect card. Also, although you can use that sim card in a phone, the sim card you get with that doesn't allow standard GSM voice calls to be made unfortunately

I thought some Blokia versionof Skype is there, wasn't sure if 'twas a Symbian phone though.
Guess, our wait will depend on howthe Skype guys take forward the "VoiceEngine Mobile" initiative.

I've read various articles stating Skype will be released for Symbian at some point.
Ps...As much a point as the article makes, I can't believe you quote an msmobiles article??? The quy over there has as much credibility as Nick Leeson working as a personal investments advisor down your local bank!

lmao @ Nick Leeson!! Anyway, i do agree that if developers put their minds to it, it certainly could be done. Thanx for the link, quite informative.

The article conveniently fails to point out that there are in fact only 350 ReadytoSurf locations currently in the UK -- and the bulk of those are in restaurants in the the god-awful Little Chef chain!! I don't think any self-respecting SE owner would be seen dead in one of those places anyway.
The entire premise of this 'article' is comically flawed.
