It's all down to preference of course, but you could try encoding your files to .aac format. I do that with iTunes, and halve the size of my files. I only encode them @64kbps, but that's good enough for me.
My ears are useless, so I don't really notice any loss of quality or clarity.

Even then i can hear the difference in quality

but will take a 5mb file and make into a 2mb one

If your encoding music for your phone, use AAC 64kbs in mono
