Yup! external antenna plug.
But if you live in the city, you have no use for it

Do you mean that its a cover and when opened reveals a plug to insert an external antennae?

Mostly, if not only used in carkits.
I've read about people attaching antenna's at home to be able to call in the house, but that was always diy-material or experimenting. I also read a thread somewhere about using external antennas on boats on canals in the Netherlands to get their antenna above the levees.
It is not of much use anymore in densely populated areas.

correct however it is retained for carkit use (or marine), where driving between cities for example means the extra range can be very useful. Especially in countries like australia. Also, dedicated car kits require it. With bluetooth carkits becoming common, the traditional installed carkit may become a thing of the past.
