Yup.

Buy a new CD-ROM

Seriously, you could take the facia off the drive, clean the switch with spray solvent cleaner and poke about with it but that's about all really. CD drives are designed to be throw-away, unfortunately.

It might not be the switch that's causing the problem anyway. I must admit that when we get a drive doing funny things like that in the shop, we just replace it because it works out cheaper for the customer!

Trade price is currently high £20 mark - low £30 mark so if you buy one to fit yourself, you're probably looking at around £35-£45. Put it this way, we charge £55 to supply, fit, install the software and test the drive so you don't want to be paying much more than those prices.

It might be worth taking the comp to a reputable independant PC shop just to make sure that the drive is dodgy, and have a new one fitted if necessary. It's hard to diagnose PC faults on a forum, without being able to play with the PC directly. A decent repair place won't charge you for looking at it, just for the drive itself (plus theuir mark-up and VAT) and a reasonable charge for fitting and testing. Ask them about this before you have any work carried out.

Exactly, sticky switch

Take it somewhere decent and have it looked at.
