So, yet again Nokia is hammering SE; according to www.mobil.se Nokia will announce their first 3G mobile phone on September 26th ...

I guess SE will have to move VERY fast now if they want the P800 to still be an attractive option before this date!

Indications are they won't make it in time... (sad, very sad!)

That is so not true.... CDMA2000 Networks are availble in 9 countries (South Korea Japan United States Romania Brazil Canada New Zealand Chile and Israel), and provide a wide varity of color screen mobile phones... CDMA2000 is no texacly 3G (because you cannot really make a video call) but it is much more advances that the GSM/GPRS network. Besides that, WCDMA (which works in Japan's NTT DoCoMo) and CDMA2000 EV-DO (South Korea's KTF) are full working, and have millions of users. So don't think that the 3G market is that small. I think that if Nokia will be smart enought, they will relesase a wounderful 3G phone, like Samsung, Panasonic, ans SonyEricsson (Sony-Ericsson A3014S).

but people shouldnt say 3g like its a standard

im aware of cdma networks but they arent operating anywhere near their full potential like you say video and really high speed data isnt avalible yet

the 3g market compared to gsm is small the benifits of cdma2000 networks over existing european gsm networks is marginal

so explain to me the real world advantage of releasing a "3g" phone at this time.

and i will shut up

All the 3G phones, to be released in Europe, are backwards compatible with 2G and 2,5G. That's one good reason, you have a phone that works with the "old" network and the new 3G network.

Sonera (a phone company in Finland) says they'll have their 3G network running, the day Nokia releases their 3G phone.

Well, UMTS will be released from NetCom on 1. december in Norway, but even still it will be a long and hard testing period before it is released countrywide.

But still Nokia has an advantage releasing the first UMTS phone, but I`m afraid it will be just like when they released the first WAP phone (7110) which proved to be kinda useless(AND BIG!!) when considering the other models that come shortly after.

Buying the very first UMTS phone wont be the most clever move I think.. Wait and see what SE shows up with, I am pretty sure theyll breathe heavily down nokias neck shortly after their release..

its not always best to be first..

Uptake of 3G will not be massive as it was with GSM from Analogue...it is not expected to have a significant market share until 2005...that is a long 2 year product life for the P800...and the troubles that 3 are experiencing with handsets switching to roam on O2 GSM it will be interesting!...the industry has a history of fuck ups lets hope 3G aint one of them! In what area?!?!?
Data rate? (theoretical peak data rate is about 144kbps packet data for 1X... theoretical peak data rate of GPRS beats that, not to mention EDGE. note that 1XEV-DO is not there yet...)
Voice capacity? GSM is the best so far, and far beyond
Roaming?

Yes yes my friends so that fool who said nokia is so great for making a 3g phone is wrong for even thinking that nokia would gain some kind of commercial advantage This post was posted from a T68i
