I got an air rifle just to play around with and use as target practice in my garden, and now one of my neighbours told her that i need to report it to the police.

So im just wondering what the rules are on owning one?

thanks

You don't need to inform anyone or obtain a license providing that the air gun does not use Carbon Dioxide cannisters. Basically, it's down to how powerfull the gun is. Anything above 12 ft/lbs muzzle energy requires a license.

Take a look here:

The British association of shooting and conservation is a good site for stuff like this and their Air Rifles Code of Practice gives details of the law etc

Shouldn't be a problem I don't think in your garden, I've got an air rifle and have used it in the back garden before.

I don't have a licence for mine, I believe it's just those (as someone has said) that take CO2 or compressed air cartridges, not those which you cock yourself ( ).

I have a C02 powered one, and as long as it's on private property, your not doing anything wrong. As long your over 18 when purchasing it, or at 17 when recieving it as a gift.

Mine was at a party at a penthouse suite in a hotel, and it got searched by police, they found the gun (amoungst other things) and even though it had Gas in there, and was loaded... They let it go as they can't do anything on private property. If it was in the middle of the street that would have been a completley different story.

If carrying it in the street it needs to be in the original box & in a carrier bag.
