Anyone hear anything about when there will be a US version? Since the P990i is NOT quad band (missing the 850 band whic is critical in the US) it is kind of useless...

Really, really annoying...how can they not make it quad band? Incredibly stupid, imo.

@msb212

I expressed the very exact sentiments a few days ago.

Literally almost word for word. It is rediculous. Motorola builds so many quad phones which can be used by so many places and carriers.

Please wake up !!!!!!! There is a customer base in the U.S. as well. This is not even ignorance at this point. It's pure foolishness and a shot in the foot with all the competition in the cell phone industry.

I bought the P910i before it was out in the States from an online shop from London. I was planning on doing the same...so who cares if they don't make a US specific version? The European version will work just fine here.

of course, the fact that it's UMTS kinda limits the US appeal.....

@tylast

It depends on your carrier. Cingular uses more 850Mhz. 1900 is used, however not in all locations. However the 850 band is used all over the network.

Well, I just have a question... what's the point of the 850 frequency to exist at all?? Isn't the US the ONLY country on the planet that uses it?? Why did they achieve having that separate freq.? Is there a technical reason?

ok, some of this may be a little out of date.

most countries in the world (europe, most of asia, and the pacific rim) opted to standardise their mobile phone communication standards and adopted GSM. in the US the competing carrier were left to adopt whatever technology they wished. the US and much of the americas adopted a variety of incompatible standards at different frequencies.

there are various explanations touted as to why gsm in north america uses different frequencies from the rest of the world (e.g. military use, prior licensing to CB radio operators), but i haven't been able to find anything definitive in the last quarter hour. suffice it to say that 1900 mhz was rolled out first, and more recently 850mhz has entered the market due to it's superior signal quality.

so, while the rest of the world was adopting GSM the US implemented:

1. TDMA – AT&T, Cingular
2. CDMA – Sprint, Verizon
3. I-den – Nextel
4. AMPS – This is analog service and is used by many smaller, regional wireless carriers.
5. GSM – Voicestream (a.k.a Powertel) now re-christened T-mobile, Pacbell (Cingular on the west coast) and Bellsouth Mobility (Cingular in the South East), AT&T (nationally but small footprint compared to TDMA).

Cingular and T-mobile (Voicestream, Powertel) roam on each other networks providing national GSM coverage.

AT&T has introduced GSM service as well as TDMA, which means some AT&T subscribers have GSM and some TDMA, all in the same city. This is all very easy to understand to the average rocket scientist.

Which means, tough luck for all you in the US. Too bad, move to Asia or something. Good luck.

@gelfen
Wow!! Thanks for that complete answer. Very nice of you!

Mmm so IMHO, pretty much you could say that they have the 850freq. just because they HAVE to be 'different' and not for a legitimate technical reason.
Oh Lord....
