> svchost.exe crashes on pluggin in K750i USB

I have a new K750i and I'm trying to connect it to a PC (XP Pro SP1) by USB cable for the first time (it has connected via BT sucessfully before).
When I plug in the cable I get the XP pop up balloon that says it's detected a K750 but the I get a windows dialog that tells me svchost.exe has crashed. The install drivers dialog doesn't appear and the whole desktop becomes flaky and unresponsive requiring a re-boot.
Any suggestions anyone?

In case if helps anyone else I found a work round.
I booted the system into safe mode - then connect the phone and installed with the latest drivers from the Sony Web site. It worked OK once I booted back into standard mode.
