the subject already says everything I want to know: is
YamiGo basically doing nothing else than running a Jabber-Server or am I mistaken?

I don't know what you mind for jabber-server, but "My friends" is where you can chat with you contacts in almost every messenger, plus you can make chat rooms, read news from dedicate servers. This is what i remember now... take care.
