As far as I am aware one needs a handset configured for i-mode to use the service, thus not all SE handsets support it.

Hi friends,

Just a few lines about Imode.

It is very similar to for example Vodafone Live or here in Sweden TeliaGo...it means that when You buy a mobile/subscription from the operator you get a preprogramed mobile wich makes it easy to use the datacentric services on the mobile. It was actually introduced by Docomo to let the Japanese subscribers send text messages (email) to each other, this since SMS is not possible in the PDC networks. By the way if you have not been to Tokyo maybe you are not aware that it is considered very rude to speak in your mobile on the train for example. Thus you can see a lot of people sending emails using their mobiles during travel. Further if You by a mobile to use on the Docomo network You don´t buy the brand name. Mobiles from different vendors have the same number. The number indicates what kind of services you can use with the phone.
Imode pages can be read in the web-browser of the more recent SE mobiles.

O2 has just launched it and there is more info on their handsets in the above link. No phones support it from what I know, only the Japanese ones.

Telstra have just released i-mode on their new 3G service (infrastructure they are sharing with '3')

It's not available on standard gprs.

@max-wedge. I think it is available on 2.5g phones on the O2 network in the UK, from what I have read.

What I meant was is it's not available on Telstra's standard gprs here in Australia. But I just checked and I'm dead wrong. i-mode has been available on 2.5G Telstra handsets since about November, and is now moving to 3G

I think from memory, I-mode was first introduced here on cdma for broadband wireless internet access for PC use (not phones)!
