Hi!
I just read that the same time SE announced the P990i, Nokia announced three new phones (E60, E70, E71).
A lot of people don't like Nokia, because they are releasing the same phone with minor changes with different numbering. But it has some advantage also: people can get a phone to their needs mor easily.
For example SE could make
- a P980 version with the qwerty keyboard on the flip, and not on the phone,
- a P991 version with bigger screen (and of course again the keyboard removed to make space for the bigger screen)
- a P950 version withouth 3G
- a P920 version withouth wifi and 3G, and with only a VGA camera, for those who use it more as a business phone
etc...
What do you think? I think it would improve the sales, and I don't think it would require too much extra work.

It may work in a distant future when SE start to earn alot more money than today.

Agreed with you there.. Currently se has only one flagship smartphone model. A range of smartphones with different options would be much better...

Isn't your P920 the same as the P910? Actually it has the same specs as a P800! Don't worry I know what you're implyin

Hehe, no, it's different, because it would still include the FM Radio, which I miss the most in my p800

And it could have less the weight (100-110g).

SE may be 3rd or 4th in ranking at the moment, but a range of SmartPhones would absolutely prove to be worthy competition against Nokia, to the extent that SE excellence of design would almost certainly eventually challenge them for number1 spot, imho

@space thats the way how nokia is doing their biz. they release the "almost same" model in 10 different variations... i dont think there is any need to follow that way...

many of nokia's "improved" models only have software upgrade, so applied to se you would have k750, one month later they'd release k751 which has better night mode, then k752 with picture crop tool, k753 with pic resize... anyway se probably calculated that they would get most money this way, otherwise they would do it your way (leaving out 3g, then wifi... then launching, promoting 4 different models etc. wouldn't bring so much new customers that it would pay off.)

I agree that it would be insane to add a series of new smartphones... but maybe they can add one more, a P-lite. For example here in Romania there is only one operator supporting 3G, and only in bigger cities. There are very few wifi hotspots... So I cannot even use those. Withouth them the phone would be smaller/lighter and probably cheaper

When I interviewed SE at the Smartphone show, they wouldn't give me much response to my questions about widening the portfolio (like Nokia have with Series 60).
I did point out that with SE, it's a case of having a new smartphone to replace the next, and the closest I got was an admission that UIQ could easily fit other form factors - perhaps for a phone without a keyboard, or just T9 for text entry etc.
So, it's possible they will have a few different products in the future (and by that, I mean over the next 12 months).
SE won't be catching up with Nokia anytime soon for market share, but if they become profitable enough (and with sales of the K750 and W800 going through the roof, it must help) then they can build up like any small trader would. Make a product, sell it.. make two products, sell them, make four.. etc. Since 2001, they've come a long way.
With so few phones in comparison to Nokia, it's pretty good that so many people opt for a Sony Ericsson phone - because they are so feature packed for the money.
