I just had the same problem yesterday. Bought a 128MB MMC from California over the internet (Kodak) but its 5-year warranty is limited and does not cover outside the US. Started to panic a bit... my system at home uses ME and it wouldn't recognise the card and reformatting would lead to error message that it was write protected. In fact, the USB card reader would start flashing and my whole system would freeze.
Solution = brought it into work where we have Win2000. Managed to reformat it through that. Win2000 has quite a few disk management utilities (right-click My Computer, choose 'Manage'). In the end, I chose to reformat using FAT file system and it all worked OK.
Good luck.

i'vw already tried that. i called jessops (the make of the usb reader) and they said it wasn't the memory card becuase it did the same thing with three cards. so they told me to take it back to the shop and get it exchaged for a new one for free. col huh.
