Would anyone know how to retsore a p910i backup from one p910i onto another different p910i...the sony ericsson software doesnt seem to allow it.
Failing that would anyone know how to read the backup data as its in an ecs file format? thanks!

You'll be pleased to hear that it *is* possible ... I had to do it myself a few weeks back.
Just use the Import function on the "Backup and Restore" program to import the latest backup file from your old phone's backup set to your new phone's list of backups, then do a restore to your new phone using the backup file you've just imported.
I also vaguely recall (tho I might be wrong) that even without doing the above, you're given an option to select a backup file from another phone once you've initiated the Restore. But try the Import method anyway -- it definitely works.

more on this: the file is in zip format, which means you can rename it to .zip and use any archiving program to view the contents.
However depending on the software version (version of your desktop software, not the phone software), the files in the zip may be laid out the same as in your phone (folders et al) or there may be just a single backup folder with files numbered in serial order. in the latter case you can find a text file which lists each serial number against the path of the file. the files themselves are unchanged inside this zip archive, other than their names
