Has anyone travelled to Japan or South Korea with his/her UMTS-phone? Which phone did you have with you?
What do you think about UMTS coverage in Japan (or South Korea)? How did your phone work? And any other UMTS's experiences in Japan (or South Korea)?

South Korea uses some CDMA2000 version of UMTS AFAIK. Japan uses WCDMA but if you'll be able to use your european WCDMA phone right away is a good question. Ask your operator.

Sorry, I have to correct my language. I should have said:
"Which mobile phone did you use? How long time ago were you in Korea? Where were you?"

I wrote to Korean operator SK Telecom (operates both 3G and CDMA) and got the answer.

Dear: Sir
Thank you for your email. We are using WCDMA roaming in Singapore,
Hongkong and Japan.
Europe and other countries have not yet opened.
Also customers from Singapore, Hongkong and Japan can use their
WCDMA mobiles in Korea. We will keep expend more further areas
gradually.
Best Regards
SKT callcenter

As you can see, you can use your ordinary 3G-phone (like SE K600i, Nokia N90, Nokia 6630 etc) also in South Korea.
Question to Trilokeshh and Sony Ericsson Indonesia: which mobile did you use in Japan/Korea? And where were you exactly (city/region)?

I was in Japan for 18 days using a Vodafone Sharp 902, UK model..
In Gunma-ken, Maebashi-shi, the display on the phone alternated between
Vodafone JP --> Emergency Calls Only --> No Network and then 'WHY DID YOU BUY THIS PHONE?' before going back to Vodafone JP.
However, in Hiroshima-ken I was usually connected. When I lost the network connection, in Hiroshima and Shimane, my friends using Japanese Vodafones also lost the connection. But the Docomo friend did not.
OH!! Remember to switch any automatic checking of email of whilst you are in Japan and best not to download data... about a pound a time for every connection.
