as far as im aware, a soft reset is using the power button to turn off the phone. and a hard reset is by removing the battery to turn the phone off

EDIT: softreset usually just turns the phone off, settings r saved etc, were as a hard reset u risk damaging files and losing settings, etc etc

So why is it considered so dangerous for your phone if its just like turning off your computer at home but by the power plug?
i thought it completely wipes the whole phone!

Hmm... I'm not sure which phone or context you're referring to, but i'll tell you what it refers to on my palm and symbian phone. A soft reset is usually done when your device hangs and the power button doesn't seem to work. No data is lost. A hard reset restores the device to factory settings completely. Heh... That's why it's always important to keep a backup of everything you have on your phone. On symbian phones, i think it's a good practice to do a hard reset occasionally to clean up any junk or remains of deleted apps. Glad to have been of help.

by hard reset they probably mean MASTER RESET, which is an option in the phones menu that resets the phone to factory settings and clears all user data.
