is there an app that would allow me to trick a mobile operator. the thing is that a few of my friends went to India and bought themselves indian sim cards so they can communicate with each other (reasonable prices). there is just one catch, they can't neither send or receive smses to/from phones that don't use one of the sim cards provided by indian mobile operators. So is there an app that would allow me to type a number and the sms would behave as if sent through an indian mobile operator.
i know there was an app that allowed to choose a number from which you are suposedly sending the sms, but can't find it anymore would that do the trick?

It'b been a long time since SmsSend could send smses through ICQ. The newest version doesn't even have this option any more. This app is useful only for those Slovenians who are with the particular slovenian mobile operator. Which amongst others is me and I tried this, but my number is shown. so this won't help. Thank you, though.

We have a non-released application that sends SMS via the Clickatell gateway, and allows defining the sender. We don't know if that's enough to trick the receiving operator (although surely works for the person who receives the SMS). Using the program requires opening a HTTP API account at Clickatell which gives you 10 free messages for testing, then afterwards you need to purchase credits at EUR 0.044 per message (quite cheap). If you are interested, I can probably arrange sending a test version to you.

I would be very interested!
After all 10 free smses is enough to determine if it works or not and also to find potencial bugs
If it's possible I would really appreciate the test version.
Thank you!

Okay, you will receive an alpha copy of NetSMS today or tomorrow. Please send your Email address to our support (I remember we corresponded earlier, just let's make sure communications are all right). In the meantime you could register the above-mentioned free Clickatell account.

Got it, tried it, loved it

But I still can't send smses to my friends in India, I'm afraid.

As far as the app itself is concerned. This is a really nice little thing. Does only the necessary things. I really like that you included the check option (makes clicatell check if sms in deliverable or not). unfortunately in my case Clickatell could deliver to the mobile operator, but they refused to deliver it my friend's phone.

How would I use this app?
1) as already mentioned, you can choose how the sender will appear (you either enter a number or a name - whichever you prefer). even if you can't trick mobile operators, you still can trick your friends. I recall that there was somebody on this forum not so long ago looking for an app that would do just that
2) when abroad it will be probably cheaper to send an sms via GPRS through netSMS than using the standard sms service. I know that sending smses when abroad would cost me at least 4 times as much. Of course everybody must calculate for themselfs and this can only be done if GPRS roaming is possible.
3) this doesn't really apply to me, cos when I'm home in Slovenia an sms costs me 0,00042 euro, which is the very next thing to zero. But I imagine sending smses for 0,044 euro is much cheaper for most users than the standars rates.

last but not least:
A BUG
there is no way i could add contacts correctly to the internal phonebook. when clicking phonebook I'm shown the contacts from my phone --> then I choose name and number --> click done. But the number appears in the "Name" box and name is in the "number" box.
A SUGGESTION
flip closed version. after all, you people are known for apps that work in FC Mode

Thanks for the feedback. While we ourselves regularly use NetSMS for sending cheap text messages, we are not sure about its public release. Main features are like these:

- sending SMS over the internet at about 0.044 Euro (depends on recipient operator)
- arbitrary sender definition (any number or character string)
- global delivery report (no need to set it for each message)
- export sent messages to text file for archiving
- report on account balance and recipient coverage

We wonder if Esato users would be interested in such application, so please post your opinion here.

@Lisa@CPS
I think you should open a new thread. perhaps with a poll if possible. I think that will give the best feedback about the (non)interest conserning the app.

I think some people would certainly use it on a daily basis, cos the smses are really not expensive.
